Scale enterprise and basic edition clusters

Scale an Enterprise Edition or Basic Edition cluster when its reserved resources are insufficient or excessive for your business needs.

Prerequisites

  • Your Alibaba Cloud account does not have unpaid renewal orders.

  • The Enterprise Edition cluster is in the Running state.

Billing

For the billing of reserved resources for Enterprise Edition and Basic Edition clusters, see Pricing for Enterprise Edition and Basic Edition.

Duration

  • Scaling involves data redistribution through migration. The duration is proportional to the data volume.

  • Scaling down a cluster involves data migration that can take anywhere from several to tens of hours. Proceed with caution if your cluster contains a large amount of data.

  • After initiating the configuration change, you can monitor its progress on the Clusters page or the Task Center page in the console.

Impacts

  • During the scaling process, you cannot submit an asynchronous job by using the SUBMIT JOB statement. If your business depends on this feature, schedule the scaling operation for a suitable time.

  • A brief connection interruption may occur when the scaling operation completes. Perform this operation during off-peak hours or ensure that your application has an automatic reconnection mechanism.

  • You cannot manually change the cluster configuration while a resource scaling plan is active. To manually change the configuration, you must first disable the resource scaling plan. You can re-enable the plan after the manual change is complete.

  • When changing the ESSD performance level, ensure that the data stored in the cluster does not exceed the ESSD capacity limits. For more information, see ESSD.

Procedure

Enterprise edition

Scale up

  1. Log on to the AnalyticDB for MySQL console. In the top-left corner of the page, select the region where the cluster is located. In the left-side navigation pane, click Clusters. On the Enterprise Edition tab, find the target cluster and click Scale Up in the Actions column.

  2. On the Upgrade/Downgrade page, set Single-node Specifications of Reserved Resources, Reserved Resource Nodes, or ESSD Performance Level.

  3. For a Subscription cluster, read and select the terms of service, click Buy Now, confirm the order and payment method, then click Subscribe. For a Pay-as-you-go cluster, read and select the terms of service, and then click Buy Now.

Scale down

  1. Log on to the AnalyticDB for MySQL console. In the top-left corner of the page, select the region where the cluster is located. In the left-side navigation pane, click Clusters. On the Enterprise Edition tab, find the target cluster and choose More > Scale Down in the Actions column.

  2. On the Downgrade page, set Single-node Specifications of Reserved Resources, Reserved Resource Nodes, or ESSD Performance Level.

  3. For a Subscription cluster, read and select the terms of service, click Buy Now, confirm the order and payment method, then click Subscribe. For a Pay-as-you-go cluster, read and select the terms of service, and then click Buy Now.

Common errors

Query execution error: can not submit job because unfinished async task's number = 1. Overwrite async job is not allowed

Cause: An asynchronous job was submitted during cluster scaling.

Solution: Schedule the scaling for a time that does not interfere with your business operations, or resubmit the asynchronous job after the scaling completes.
