This topic describes how to create an AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL instance in the console.

Prerequisites

  • You must have an Alibaba Cloud account. If you do not have one, register for an account on the Alibaba Cloud official website.

  • If you are using AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL for the first time, you must authorize a service-linked role in the console. Follow these steps:

    1. Log on to the AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL console.
    2. In the upper-right corner of the page, click Create Instance.

    3. In the Create Service Linked Role dialog box, click OK.

Free trial

Alibaba Cloud offers a free trial for Elastic Storage Mode instances. If you are a new user of AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL, you can apply on the Alibaba Cloud Free Trial page. If you are not eligible for a free trial, create an instance by following the procedure in this topic.

Procedure

  1. Log on to the AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL console.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the page, click Create Instance to go to the purchase page.

  3. Select a Product Type. The following options are available:

    • Subscription: A prepaid method where you pay upfront when creating the instance. This option is cost-effective for long-term needs and offers greater discounts for longer durations.

    • Pay-as-you-go: A postpaid method with hourly billing. This option is ideal for short-term needs. You can release the instance at any time to save costs.

  4. Configure the following parameters.

    Parameter

    Description

    Region and Zone

A Region is the geographical location where the instance is deployed.

    Note
    • You cannot change the region after the instance is created. To reduce latency, select a region that is geographically close to your application.

    • Make sure that your instance and the ECS instances to which you want to connect are created in the same region. Otherwise, they cannot communicate over the internal network and must use the public network, which degrades performance.

An Zone is an independent physical area within a region. There is no significant difference between availability zones.

You can create the instance in the same or a different availability zone as your ECS instances.

    Instance resource type

Select the instance resource type. The following options are available:

    • Elastic Storage Mode: Supports independent and online scaling of disk capacity without service interruption.

    • ServerlessPro: You specify only the required compute resources and do not need to provision storage.

    Note

The available instance resource type options vary by region and availability zone. If your desired instance resource type is not available, select a different region and availability zone.

For more information about resource types available in different regions and availability zones, see Specifications and selection.

    Engine Version

Select the engine version for the instance. Options are 7.0 Standard Edition and 6.0 Standard Edition.

    Note

This parameter is available only for instances in Elastic Storage Mode.

    Product type

    Select the product type.

AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL 6.0 supports only the Standard Edition. AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL 7.0 supports the Standard Edition (x86 architecture) and Cost-efficient Edition (ARM architecture). The Standard Edition is selected by default.

For more information about Version 7.0 Economy Edition, see Version 7.0 Economy Edition.

    Note

This parameter is available only for instances in Elastic Storage Mode.

    Instance Edition

Select the edition. Options are High-performance Edition (Basic Edition) and High-availability Edition.

    Note

Only instances in Elastic Storage Mode support the High-performance Edition (Basic Edition). For more information, see High-performance Edition instances.

    Vector Engine Optimization

Select whether to enable Vector Engine Optimization. Valid values:

    • Disable (Recommended for Data Warehouses): We recommend disabling this feature for mainstream analytics, data warehousing, and real-time data warehousing scenarios.

    • Enable: We recommend enabling this feature for scenarios such as AIGC and vector search.

Assess the potential impact of this feature before enabling it. Enabling Vector Engine Optimization improves the vector analysis performance of the instance. However, this feature consumes a significant amount of memory and greatly reduces the instance's concurrency.

    Note
    • Only instances in Elastic Storage Mode support Vector Engine Optimization.

    • The compute node specifications must be 4-core 32 GB or higher.

    Coordinator node resources

Select the specifications for the coordinator node. We recommend following the formula: Coordinator CUs = Number of CPU cores of a single compute node.

If you need more coordinator node resources, you can scale them up after the instance is created. For more information, see Manage coordinator node resources.

    Compute node specifications

Select the specifications for the compute nodes. The available specifications vary by instance resource type and Instance Edition. For more information, see Specifications and selection.

    Note

This parameter is available only for instances in Elastic Storage Mode.

    Number of compute nodes

Select the number of compute nodes. Performance scales linearly with the number of nodes. The allowed number of nodes varies by Instance Edition:

    • High-availability Edition: 4 to 512 nodes, in increments of 4.

    • High-performance Edition (Basic Edition): 2 to 512 nodes, in increments of 2.

    Note

This parameter is available only for instances in Elastic Storage Mode.

    Storage disk type

Select the disk type for data storage. The following options are available:

    • ESSD PL1 (Recommended)

    • PL0 ESSD

    • ESSD PL2 (High Throughput)

For more information about the performance differences between disk types, see Block storage performance.

    Note

This parameter is available only for instances in Elastic Storage Mode.

    Encryption Type

    Select No or Disk Encryption.

    Note

This parameter is available only for instances in Elastic Storage Mode.

    CMK

Select an encryption key for the disk.

This parameter is required only when you select Disk Encryption for an instance in Elastic Storage Mode.

    Storage capacity per node

Specifies the dedicated storage space for each compute node. The storage capacity ranges from 50 GB to 128,000 GB, in increments of 50 GB.

    Note

This parameter is available only for instances in Elastic Storage Mode.

    Reserved compute resources

Specifies the number of CUs for the compute nodes. The minimum is 16 CUs.

    Note

This parameter is available only for instances in ServerlessPro.

    Serverless cache size

The total disk size attached to the compute nodes. We recommend a minimum of 800 GB. For sizes above 800 GB, you can adjust the size based on your hot data volume, for example, 30% of the total data size.

    Note

This parameter applies to the total cache size for all compute nodes, not for a single compute node, and is available only for instances in ServerlessPro.

    Network Type

The only available network type is VPC.

    VPC

Select the ID of the VPC.

A VPC is an isolated network environment that offers better security and performance than the classic network. You must first create a VPC and a vSwitch in the same region as the instance.

    vSwitch

Select a vSwitch within the VPC. If no vSwitches are listed, it means none are available in the selected availability zone. You can either select a different availability zone or create a vSwitch in the current zone.

    Resource Group

Select the resource group to which the instance belongs. For more information about resource groups, see What is Resource Management?

    Sample Data

Specifies whether to load sample data. For more information, see Manage sample datasets.

    AI Node

With AI Nodes, you can perform the following operations:

    • Deploy large models (such as DeepSeek and Qwen series) and small models (such as Embedding and Rerank models) on AI Nodes.

    • Use dedicated AI Node resources, which ensures performance and data security when you call Embedding and Rerank models.

    • Use powerful GPU acceleration to perform efficient data analysis and machine learning tasks with in-database AI/ML on AI Nodes.

If you have these requirements, select Enable. Otherwise, select Disable.

    AI node specifications

You can select AI Node specifications only if you enable AI Node.

    Number of AI nodes

This parameter is available only if you enable AI Node. You must select at least one node. Because each AI Node can deploy only one model, select the number of nodes based on your needs.

    Subscription Duration

Select the subscription duration for the instance.

    Note

This parameter is required only when the Subscription is subscription.

  5. Click Buy Now.

  6. On the Confirm Order page, complete the payment based on your selected Product Type:

    • Subscription: Click Pay Now, and then click Pay.

    • Pay-as-you-go: Click Create Now.

    Note

The AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL instance takes a few moments to initialize. You can view the new instance on the Instances page. The instance is ready when its status changes to Running.
