Alibaba Cloud offers a web-based remote proctoring demo. This topic covers the main features of the remote proctoring solution and guides you through the demo.

To experience the demo, you need at least one PC browser and one mobile browser:

  • PC browser: The proctor uses the PC browser to create an examination room and monitor examinees. We recommend using Google Chrome.

  • Mobile browser: The examinee uses the mobile browser for stream publishing. We recommend scanning the QR code with DingTalk or WeChat, or opening the link directly in a mobile browser.

Feature overview

Create an examination room

Create a sample examination room. In the demo environment, Alibaba Cloud automatically generates an examination room with one proctor and five examinees. In production, you can customize the number of examinees based on your business needs.

Proctor view

  • View the video feeds of all examinees in the examination room.

  • Mute all examinees or a specific examinee.

  • Start a live broadcast to all examinees.

  • Play a specified audio file as a system-wide broadcast to all examinees.

  • Double-click an examinee's video tile to switch it to a large view for high-definition observation.

  • In high-definition observation mode, the proctor can start a one-to-one call with the examinee.

  • End the exam.

Examinee view

  • Automatically execute commands from the proctor, such as starting a one-to-one call, receiving a live broadcast, and playing a system broadcast.

  • Offline recording: If an examinee loses their network connection, the system automatically records video locally. The recording is uploaded to the cloud once the connection is restored.

Procedure

Create an examination room

  1. Go to the remote proctoring demo page. In a PC browser, open the demo URL: Remote Proctoring Exam Demo.

  2. Create an examination room. On the Remote Proctoring Exam Demo page, enter an Exam Room Name and click Create Exam Room.

  3. After you create the examination room, the system generates access links and QR codes for the proctor and examinees to join. When the message Exam Room Created Successfully appears, the page displays details such as the Exam Room ID, name, and validity period.

Proctor view

  1. The proctor can enter the examination room by clicking the link in a PC browser (Google Chrome is recommended). Inside, the proctor can view the video feeds of all examinees. Use the Switch to Main Monitor View and Switch to Secondary Monitor View buttons in the bottom toolbar to switch camera views. To switch the view for a single examinee, click the switch icon in the upper-right corner of their video tile. The toolbar also contains the Mute All, Unmute All, and System Broadcast buttons. A red End Exam button is available in the upper-right corner.

  2. The proctor can start a live broadcast to all examinees. When active, a green Live Broadcast Active status indicator appears in the lower-left corner, and a Stop Broadcast button appears in the toolbar.

  3. The proctor can play an audio file for all examinees. Click System Broadcast in the toolbar to open the Timed Audio for This Exam dialog box. Here, you can manage timed audio for three categories: Before Exam, End of Exam, and Background Music. After selecting an audio file, click Confirm in the confirmation dialog box to start playback.

  4. Double-click the video feed of an examinee who is publishing a stream to enter a high-definition, full-screen observation mode. In this mode, the proctor can start a one-to-one call with the examinee. The Connect Device button in the lower-right corner is used to initiate the one-to-one call.

  5. After the exam is over, click the red End Exam button in the upper-right corner of the proctor page.

Examinee view

  1. The examinee can enter the examination room by clicking the PC link in a PC browser (Google Chrome is recommended) and confirming the examination room information. The page displays the Exam Room Information (Exam Room ID, Exam Room Name, and Exam Room Validity). After confirming the details are correct, click the blue Enter Exam Room button at the bottom.

  2. Before starting the exam, the examinee must perform a device check. This check includes the camera, microphone, speaker, and screen sharing. If you encounter issues during the device check, see Device connection and check for troubleshooting steps. A 4-step progress bar is displayed at the top of the device check page. In the Camera step, select your camera device, confirm the preview is working, then click Yes. Proceed to complete each check.

  3. After the examinee completes the device check and starts the exam, the main camera view from the PC is displayed. You can activate the secondary camera from a mobile phone by scanning the QR code with DingTalk or WeChat (DingTalk is recommended). The page shows the Main Camera View area in the upper left, a QR code in the lower left for activating the secondary camera (which should be placed behind the examinee to capture their full body, hands, and computer screen), and the Question Area on the right.

Device connection and check

Examinees must complete a device check on their PC before they can enter the examination room and start the exam. If your devices are functioning correctly but the page indicates an error, follow these instructions to configure the necessary permissions.

Set up the camera

Windows

  1. Right-click on your desktop and select Display settings or Personalization to open the Settings window.

  2. In the search bar at the top left of the Settings window, type camera and select Camera privacy settings.

  3. Turn on Camera access for this device, Allow apps to access your camera, and Allow desktop apps to access your camera. On the Privacy page, ensure these three toggles are set to On (blue). The toggles below them must also be turned on.

  4. Refresh the exam page. The browser automatically requests camera access. Click Allow. If the browser does not request access, or if you previously denied it, proceed with the browser settings described below.

  5. In Google Chrome, click the ... icon in the upper-right corner and select Settings to open the browser settings page.

  6. Select Privacy and security > Site settings > Camera. In the site settings list, find and click the Camera option.

  7. Under Default behavior, select Sites can ask to use your camera. In the "Not allowed to use your camera" list, remove any entries related to the exam demo.

  8. Return to the exam page and refresh it. The browser will request camera access again. Click Allow.

macOS

Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy, select Camera, and enable camera permissions for your browser.

Set up the microphone

Windows

  1. Right-click on your desktop and select Display settings or Personalization to open the Settings window.

  2. In the search bar at the top left of the Settings window, type microphone and select Microphone privacy settings.

  3. Turn on Microphone access for this device, Allow apps to access your microphone, and Allow desktop apps to access your microphone. On the Privacy page, ensure these three toggles are set to On (blue). The toggles below them must also be turned on.

  4. Refresh the exam page. The browser automatically requests microphone access. Click Allow. If the browser does not request access, or if you previously denied it, proceed with the browser settings described below.

  5. In Google Chrome, click the ... icon in the upper-right corner and select Settings to open the browser settings page.

  6. Select Privacy and Security > Site Settings > Microphone. In the Site Settings list, find and click the Microphone option.

  7. Under Default behavior, select Sites can ask to use your microphone. In the "Not allowed to use your microphone" list, remove any entries related to the exam demo.

  8. Return to the exam page and refresh it. The browser will request microphone access again. Click Allow.

macOS

Open the System Preferences > Privacy & Security page and select Microphone settings. In the application list, find the browser you are using (such as Google Chrome) and make sure its permission switch is turned on.

Set up the speaker

Windows

  1. Right-click on your desktop and select Display settings or Personalization to open the Settings window.

  2. In the search bar at the top left of the Settings window, type speaker and select Sound settings.

  3. Under Choose your output device, you can switch to the audio device you want to use. The drop-down list shows the currently active speaker and allows you to switch to other available output devices.

macOS

  1. Open the System Preferences > Sound pane. On the Output tab, a list of available sound output devices is displayed. Select the device that you want to use.

Set up screen sharing

Windows

Refresh the exam page. The browser will automatically request screen sharing. Select your entire screen to begin sharing. After sharing successfully, a confirmation message Screen is shared appears. If you need to re-share, click the Refresh button. In the sharing dialog box that appears, select the Entire Screen tab then click Share.

macOS

Go to System Preferences > Privacy & Security, find Screen Recording, and enable the screen recording permission for your browser. Return to the exam page and refresh it. The webpage will automatically request screen sharing. Select the entire screen to share.
