ASM Playground
The ASM Playground allows you to create a complete environment for a specific scenario with a single click. This environment includes workloads and all custom resources for the declarative API. You can view the configuration of any resource in the scenario to learn how to configure and use its features. This topic describes the features of the ASM Playground and explains how to create an ASM Playground instance.
Background
Service Mesh (ASM) provides a rich set of features for routing management, security, and observability. To help you understand these features, we provide detailed documentation that includes use cases, configuration procedures, and expected outcomes. However, if you are new to ASM, you may find it difficult to configure an environment by following the documentation. Even if you are familiar with ASM, you may not want to spend too much time on complex configurations just to try out new features.
To address these needs, the ASM team introduced the ASM Playground feature. Each ASM Playground demonstrates a specific scenario and automatically deploys all required resources. It also offers a certain degree of control over the scenario (the level of control varies by scenario). This way, you can set up a scenario-based environment with a single click and quickly experience the powerful features of ASM.
Create an ASM Playground instance
-
To allow users to access resources such as the ASM Playground scenario demo applications or built-in monitoring dashboards, an ASM Playground instance creates a load balancer and exposes it to the public internet. These load balancers provide access only to workloads that are associated with the ASM Playground instance.
-
An ASM Playground instance is only for demonstrating the selected scenario and does not provide the full functionality of a standard ASM instance. To prevent business losses, do not use an ASM Playground instance for any purpose other than demonstration.
Use OpenAPI to create an ASM Playground
To create an ASM Playground instance, call the CreateServiceMesh operation with the following parameters.
|
Parameter |
Value |
|
RegionId |
The region ID. |
|
IstioVersion |
The Istio version. The latest version is used by default. |
|
VpcId |
The VPC ID. |
|
VSwitches |
A list of vSwitch IDs. |
|
ApiServerPublicEip |
Specifies whether to associate a public EIP with the API server. |
|
playgroundScene |
The ID of the ASM Playground scenario. For more information, see ASM Playground scenarios. |
Expected response:
{
"RequestId": "3D3BA91A-567D-5AA1-xxxxxxx",
"ServiceMeshId": "c45798a2ef1e3444xxxxxxxx"
}
You can use the returned ServiceMeshId to retrieve information about the ASM Playground instance by using other OpenAPI operations. For example, you can call the DescribeServiceMeshUpgradeStatus operation to check the creation status of the ASM Playground instance, or call the DescribeServiceMeshKubeconfig operation to get the kubeconfig file for the ASM Playground instance.
Use the console to createan ASM Playground
-
Log on to the ASM console. In the left-side navigation pane, choose .
-
On the Mesh Management page, click Create ASM Playground, and configure the ASM Playground instance settings.
Parameter
Description
ASM Playground instance name
The name of the ASM Playground instance.
Region
The region where the ASM Playground instance is located.
Payment type
Only the following billing method is supported. For more information, see Billing.
-
Pay as you go: With this post-paid method, you are charged only for the resources you use.
VPC
The VPC for the ASM Playground instance. You can click Create VPC to create one. For more information, see Create and manage a VPC.
vSwitch
The vSwitch for the ASM Playground instance. You can click Create vSwitch to create one. For more information, see Create and manage vSwitches.
API Server access
For the CLB instance of the API server, you can also configure whether to Use EIP to expose API Server.
-
Selected: An EIP is created and attached to the private SLB instance. You can then use a kubeconfig file to connect to and manage the ASM instance over the internet.
-
Not selected: No EIP is created. You can use a kubeconfig file to connect to and manage the ASM instance only from within the VPC.
ASM Playground Scenario
Select a scenario for the ASM Playground instance. For more information, see ASM Playground scenarios.
-
-
Read and select the Service Agreement, and click Create Service Mesh.
