Compare the data protection solutions for File Storage NAS (General-purpose NAS) in terms of backup capabilities, restoration methods, backup storage costs, recommended scenarios, protection scenarios, and benefits to choose the solution that best fits your business and compliance requirements.

Note

For Extreme NAS, you must use Extreme NAS snapshots or On-premises NAS to back up data. Extreme NAS is not covered in this topic.

Backup capability

File Storage NAS

NAS recycle bin

When the recycle bin is enabled, deleted files and directories are temporarily stored in it and permanently removed after a specified retention period. During the retention period, you can restore these files and directories along with their metadata, such as user identifiers (UIDs), group identifiers (GIDs), and ACLs.

Cloud Backup

NAS backup

NAS file systems, directories, or individual files are periodically backed up to a backup vault based on a specified policy. Capacity and Performance NAS files are supported, along with the NFS and CIFS/SMB protocols. If files are accidentally deleted or tampered with, you can use Cloud Backup to restore them. For fine-grained protection, you can back up all files in a file system or only files that match specified conditions. No backup agent or client is required.

Cross-region replication of NAS backup vaults

You can create a remote mirror repository for a backup vault. Data in the backup vault is automatically replicated to the mirror repository, enabling cross-region multi-version backups that can be used for remote data restoration.

Restoration methods

Restoration method

File Storage NAS

NAS recycle bin

Use the console or API to restore files from the recycle bin to the original path or a different path.

Note
  • Each file system allows you to run only one restore job at a time.

  • You can restore only one file or directory in a single restore job.

Cloud Backup

NAS backup

Use the console or API to restore backup points of a single file, multiple files that match a specified rule, or all files in a file system to the original or a different directory.

Backup storage costs

Backup storage cost

File Storage NAS

NAS recycle bin

Enabling the recycle bin is free. However, you are charged for the storage space occupied by files temporarily stored in the recycle bin. Storage fees are calculated based on the storage type of the files before deletion.

Cloud Backup

NAS backup

Cloud Backup provides the same deduplication and compression capabilities as professional backup software. You pay only for the backup storage space after deduplication and compression.

Note

The deduplication and compression ratio varies by data type and incremental data size. Typically, the ratio for text files is about 30:1 and for VMware virtual machines exceeds 100:1. Actual ratios may vary.

Cross-region replication of NAS backup vaults

  • Storage space fees for local and remote backups

  • Fees for cross-region replication traffic

Recommended scenarios

Recommended scenario

File Storage NAS

NAS recycle bin

Accidental file deletion from a General-purpose NAS file system can interrupt your business or cause permanent data loss. To prevent these issues, enable the recycle bin feature.

Cloud Backup

NAS backup

  • You need to back up files, directories, and file systems on a regular basis (hourly, daily, or weekly), with a defined retention period for backup data, to handle unexpected data restoration needs or meet compliance requirements.

  • Historical versions need to be retained for data restoration.

  • Batch backup or restoration of multiple files is required.

Cross-region replication of NAS backup vaults

To prevent regional disasters from affecting business continuity, create remote backups for your files, directories, and NAS file systems. Backup data can be used for remote disaster recovery.

Protection scenarios

Protection scenario

File Storage NAS

NAS recycle bin

  • Accidentally deleted data

Important

The NAS recycle bin only stores deleted files temporarily. It cannot restore historical versions after data changes. To restore historical versions, use the NAS backup feature of Cloud Backup.

Cloud Backup

NAS backup

  • Ransomware attacks (we recommend that you enable backup locking and backup point virus detection for core data)

  • Accidentally deleted data (we recommend that you enable the immutable backup feature for core data)

Cross-region replication of NAS backup vaults

  • Regional natural disasters

  • O&M errors
