Migrating to the cloud is a finite objective for an enterprise that is implementing its cloud strategy. In contrast, using the cloud effectively is an ongoing process. This process spans the entire implementation of a cloud-driven strategy, starting with the initial migration and continuing indefinitely.

Many enterprises have recently moved their systems to the cloud, which has resulted in the development of many methods and processes for cloud migration. In practice, however, a gap has emerged. The scope of cloud adoption is growing, and new cloud products, technologies, and use cases are constantly being introduced. However, these two trends do not always advance in tandem. As a result, after the initial migration phase, using the cloud effectively becomes the main challenge. This challenge impacts an enterprise's ability to successfully implement its cloud strategy and realize value from the cloud.

Using the cloud effectively has four specific meanings:

Continuously build on the outcomes of the initial cloud migration. This deepens the understanding of cloud technology and leverages its advantages to further achieve the goals of the cloud strategy.
Ensure that systems migrated to the cloud before a formal strategy was established, or systems affected by a revised strategy, align with the current cloud migration plan. These systems must also track and meet the objectives defined in the cloud strategy.
An enterprise implementing its cloud strategy should not be limited by the products and technology stack from the initial migration. When expanding horizontally by migrating more systems, it should also expand vertically by introducing more cloud technologies and products. This progression moves the enterprise from an initial stage to a development stage and an innovation stage.
The continuous adoption of cloud products and technologies by enterprises creates a cycle of improvement. Customer practices evolve into use cases. Replicating these use cases leads to the development of scenario-based solutions. These solutions, in turn, establish best practices for implementation. When implementing a cloud strategy, an enterprise can reference these resources to find the most direct path to success.
