Use Cloud Backup to implement cross-region or cross-zone disaster recovery for Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances. This topic walks you through the end-to-end workflow.

The following diagram shows the end-to-end workflow for implementing ECS disaster recovery in the Cloud Backup console.

ECS disaster recovery

Note

Cross-region and cross-zone disaster recovery follow the same workflow. The examples in this topic use cross-region disaster recovery.

  1. Activate Cloud Backup

Activating Cloud Backup is free. You are charged for the Cloud Backup client used for ECS disaster recovery and for cross-region replication traffic. For pricing details, see Billing methods and billable items.

  2. Create a disaster recovery site pair

A disaster recovery site pair consists of a production site and a disaster recovery site. Specify the name, region, and virtual private cloud (VPC) for each site.

  3. Add the ECS instances to be protected

Add the ECS instances to protect. This step ensures that the ECS instances can be initialized.

  4. Start replication

Enable real-time replication to continuously replicate ECS instance data to Alibaba Cloud.

  5. Perform a disaster recovery drill

Start a protected ECS instance in the cloud to verify that applications behave as expected.

  6. Perform a failover

If a critical failure occurs at the production site, switch workloads to the disaster recovery site. Conduct regular drills to confirm that applications can be restored at any time.

  7. Perform a reverse replication

After failing over from Region A to Region B, replicate applications back from Region B to Region A.
