Automate resource monitoring with tags

Updated at:

For large organizations, managing thousands of resources can be challenging. Even when resources are grouped, you may still have thousands of groups, making manual maintenance a time-consuming and error-prone task. Cloud Monitor lets you attach tags to resources to automatically classify, manage, and monitor them. This approach reduces your resource monitoring costs.

Prerequisites

Tags have been attached to your resources across Alibaba Cloud services as needed.

Background information

The following limits apply to managing resources with tags in Cloud Monitor:

  • This feature is available only for ECS instances, ApsaraDB RDS instances, and SLB instances. It does not support other resources, such as network interface controllers or disks.

  • An application group can contain a maximum of 3,000 resources per product. Resources are added to the group in a random order. Resources that exceed this limit are not added to the group.

  • After you create an application group, its monitoring charts become available in about five minutes.

  • About five minutes after you create an application group, the system automatically sends alerts based on the configured alert rules.

Bind a predefined tag

When you create resources on other Alibaba Cloud services, you can attach the cloudmonitor-group tag to manage them in the Cloud Monitor console. Cloud Monitor automatically creates a dedicated application group for this tag. Within the group, you can view monitoring charts and manage your resources.

  1. When you create resources on other Alibaba Cloud services, attach the cloudmonitor-group tag.

  2. Cloud Monitor automatically creates an application group in the Cloud Monitor console based on the tag.

    Note

For an automatically created application group, the Alert Contact Group is set to Account Alert Contacts and the alert template is set to Basic Template by default. You can modify these settings as needed.

Specify tags in the console

For resources with tags other than cloudmonitor-group, you can manually create an application group in the Cloud Monitor console to manage them.

  1. Log on to the Cloud Monitor console.

  2. Create an application group to specify the tags.

    Note

It can take up to two minutes for a newly created application group to appear.

    1. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Cloud Resource Monitoring > Application Groups.

    2. On the Application Groups tab, click Create Application Group.

    3. In the Create Application Group panel, configure the parameters for the application group.

      • For Creation Method, select Create Based on Tags. The system automatically generates an Application Group Name.

      • The Alert Contact Group defaults to Account Alert Contacts. You can change this setting as needed.

      • The alert template defaults to Basic Template. You can change this setting as needed.

      • Set the Resource Tag Key and Resource Tag Value as needed.

      • Turn on the Initialize Agent Installation switch. Cloud Monitor automatically installs the Cloud Monitor agent in batches on all instances within the group.

    4. Click OK.

You can then use the Resource Tag filter to find resources with the specified tag value.
