To improve stability when accessing instances in US regions, Data Management Service (DMS) is now deployed independently there. As a result, non-US DMS sites no longer support managing US region instances. To prevent service disruption, you must migrate these instances to the DMS US site. The US instance migration feature helps you smoothly migrate your instances.
Before you begin
Before you begin, ensure that you meet the following requirements.
-
Permissions: Your Alibaba Cloud account must have the DMS
administratororDBArole to initiate and run the migration. -
US site initialization: Before you start the migration, you must initialize your tenant on the DMS US site.
-
Log in to the DMS US site with your Alibaba Cloud account at least once before starting the migration.
-
Login URLs:
-
Purpose: This action creates a tenant on the US site, which is required for the instance migration. You cannot start the migration without completing this step.
-
-
Existing task check: Check the US region instances that you plan to migrate and ensure that no DMS tasks, such as data cleanup or task orchestration, are running or scheduled. The migration disables the instance endpoint on the original site, which will cause any dependent tasks to fail.
-
Migration scope:
Item
Description
Instances and physical databases
Only for instances in US regions and their physical databases.
User information
Includes all users and roles within the tenant.
Approval processes
All custom approval templates and nodes in .
Security rules
All security rule configurations in .
User permissions
All user permissions, database owner information, and permission policy configurations within the tenant.
Data sensitivity labels
All existing data sensitivity labels on fields in US region instances.
Procedure
Log in to DMS 5.0.
-
In the top navigation bar, choose .
-
On the Instance Management page, click US instance migration in the upper-right corner.
-
In the Important Notice dialog box that appears, click I Understand, Migrate Now to create the migration task.
The notice states that to improve the stability of DMS when accessing instances in US regions, you must complete the migration by February 28, 2026. Note the following: Only an administrator or DBA can initiate the migration. Before you start, you must initialize your tenant by logging in to the DMS US site. Use
dms-us-west-1.aliyun.comfor Alibaba Cloud accounts that are created on the China site ordms-us-west-1.alibabacloud.comfor accounts that are created on the international site. After the migration, the existing US region instances on your original site will be automatically disabled. Before you start, ensure that no DMS data change tasks or periodic tasks are running on the US region instances. -
A migration task can have several statuses: Successful, Running, Queuing, or Failed.
The Migration Task List dialog box displays the progress of each sub-task in a table, including the Task ID, Task Name, and Status columns. For example, the user information, instance, and approval process migrations are successful; the security rule migration is running; and the database, permission, and sensitivity label migrations are queued.
-
For failed tasks, you can perform the Retry Task operation.
In the Migration Task List dialog box, locate the task with the Failed status and click Retry Task to run it again.
Post-migration verification
After the migration task is complete, perform the following steps to verify the result:
-
Verify the instance status on the non-US site.
-
Refresh the Instance List page on the DMS China site.
-
Confirm that the status of the migrated instances has changed to disabled. You can no longer perform database operations on these instances from the non-US site.
-
-
Log on to the US site to access the instances.
-
Go to the Instance List page on the DMS US site.
-
In the instance list, access one of the newly migrated instances. You can try running an SQL query to verify its availability.
-
-
(Optional) Reconfigure tasks. If the original instances have periodic tasks, you must recreate and configure these tasks on the US site.
FAQ
-
Q: What happens to my US instances on the non-US site after the migration?
A: They are automatically disabled and become read-only. You cannot perform any operations on them from that site. All future management must be done from the US site. -
Q: What happens if I forget to pause periodic tasks before the migration?
A: Scheduled tasks that target US region instances will fail because the migration disables their endpoints on the original site. You must recreate these tasks on the DMS US site. -
Q: Is the migration reversible?
A: The migration is a one-way operation. You cannot migrate instances back from the US site to the original site. Please consider this carefully before proceeding.
