This topic explains how to add DNS records for a subdomain in different business scenarios.
Procedure
For example, your primary domain isexample.com, and you want to configure a DNS record for the subdomainabc.example.com.
Scenario 1: Manage domains together
Steps
-
Add the primary domain: On the Authoritative Domain Names page of the Alibaba Cloud DNS console, add the primary domain
example.com.
-
Add a DNS record: On the DNS Settings page of the primary domain, add a DNS record. Set Hostname to
abc. For details on the other parameters, see Add a DNS record.
A DNS record is for a subdomain if its hostname is set to a value other than @.
Scenario 2: Manage domains separately
-
Your primary domain is hosted by a third-party DNS provider, and you need to migrate only your subdomains to Alibaba Cloud DNS.
-
In large enterprises, headquarters often manages the primary domain, while branch offices require independent management of their subdomains.
-
Government agencies or financial institutions with self-managed DNS can delegate subdomain management to Alibaba Cloud DNS to reduce high operating and maintenance costs.
Steps
-
Add the subdomain: On the Authoritative Domain Names page of the Alibaba Cloud DNS console, add the domain
abc.example.com. For more information, see Subdomain Management.
-
Add a DNS record: On the DNS Settings page of the domain, set Hostname to
. For details on the other parameters, see Add a DNS record.@
If you configure DNS records for a subdomain using both scenarios, the Scenario 2 records take precedence. This occurs because records for an explicitly added subdomain are prioritized over those configured under its primary domain.
