Add a test device

A device must use a unique device certificate to connect to IoT Platform. The platform issues this certificate, which includes a ProductKey, DeviceName, and DeviceSecret. For production, you can obtain device certificates by purchasing activation codes. For testing before mass production, you can create free test devices for products that use device secret-based authentication. These test device certificates are for development and debugging only. They cannot be used for mass production.

Background information

The process differs depending on whether the product uses ID²-based authentication.

  • For products that use ID²-based authentication

    Products that use ID²-based authentication register with IoT Platform automatically. You do not need to add them manually. Therefore, this procedure does not apply. For more information about debugging products that use ID²-based authentication for free, see Debug ID²-based authentication.

  • For products that do not use ID²-based authentication

    If the Authentication method for your product is device secret, follow this procedure.

Procedure

  1. Go to the Device Debugging page for the product.
  2. Click Add Test Device.
  3. Configure the parameters.
    DeviceName to a custom string, MAC address, International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), or a custom serial number (SN). If this parameter is left empty, the system generates a DeviceName automatically.
  4. Click OK. A success message is displayed with the device credentials (ProductKey, DeviceName, and DeviceSecret).
    Note The platform provides 50 free activation codes (ProductKey, DeviceName, and DeviceSecret) for each product. Use these codes for device development and debugging.
  5. Click OK. The device information appears in the test device list.

    The initial status of the new test device is Inactive. The display behavior varies by project type:

    • Proprietary brand projects
      Note For proprietary brand projects, new test devices appear on the China (Shanghai) tab by default. After a device is activated, it is displayed on the tab for the corresponding data center based on its activation region.
