Problem description
When you use an email client, such as Outlook or Foxmail, you may fail to send emails even if the server parameters are correct. The following error message is reported:
Send test e-mail message: Cannot send the message. Verify the e-mail address in your account properties.
Server Response: 553 authentication is required
The system returns the following error message:
Cause
The outgoing mail server authentication settings are incorrect, or the option for outgoing server authentication is not selected.
Solutions
Outlook client
The following steps use Outlook 2016 as an example:
1. In the email settings window of your Outlook client, click More Settings.
2. In the Internet E-mail Settings window, click the Outgoing Server tab. Select My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and Use same settings as my incoming mail server. Click OK.
3. Click Test Account Settings.... Confirm that the error message no longer appears. If the problem persists, contact your Outlook service provider to troubleshoot.
Foxmail client
Foxmail 7.0:
1. In the Server Configuration window of Foxmail, select SMTP server requires authentication. Click Next.
2. Confirm that the error message no longer appears. If the problem persists, contact your Foxmail service provider to troubleshoot.
Foxmail 7.2:
1. On the main page of Foxmail, click the More menu in the upper-right corner. Then, choose Help > Gadgets > Mail Send/Receive Diagnosis.
2. On the Send/Receive Diagnosis page, select the affected email account and click Start Diagnosis.
3. After the diagnosis is complete, follow the suggestions in the diagnosis report.
4. If the problem persists, go to Settings > Account > Server in Foxmail. Make sure that the Outgoing server authentication option is set to Same as incoming server.
5. Confirm that the email sending and receiving service is enabled for the account, and that the account password and email server parameters are correct. Then, test again.
If the problem persists, contact your Foxmail service provider to troubleshoot.
