Jiangxi Rural Credit partnered with Ant Group to adopt leading cloud-native technology. They migrated their traditional business systems from a centralized architecture to the cloud. This migration established a solid technical foundation for future upgrades and the evolution of their core systems toward a distributed architecture.

Customer needs

For many years, Jiangxi Rural Credit had built its business systems on a traditional, centralized architecture that used an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). This centralized ESB was crucial for the bank's IT development and external services. However, with the rapid growth of digital technology in the finance industry, the 20-year-old ESB architecture could no longer meet the bank's business needs.

Cloud-native architecture is a leading technology popular among finance customers because it speeds up delivery, lowers O&M costs, and ensures business continuity. After careful research, Jiangxi Rural Credit decided to partner with Alibaba Cloud and Ant Group. They planned to replace their traditional, centralized ESB architecture with Service Mesh and chose their bank-enterprise reconciliation system as the pilot application.

The solution

Service Mesh is an emerging cloud-native technology that serves as a critical infrastructure layer. It resolves interoperability issues between different programming languages and technology stacks, which helps traditional applications transition to a cloud-native architecture. In 2019, Ant Group's Service Mesh successfully supported the Double 11 Shopping Festival. Its architecture covered 100% of Ant Group's core payment links, managed hundreds of thousands of containers, handled a peak of tens of millions of queries per second (QPS), and maintained an average response time (RT) of 0.2 ms. This makes it one of the largest Service Mesh clusters in the industry.

Using Service Mesh, financial institutions can decouple business applications from the underlying infrastructure. This capability ensures a smooth migration of traditional applications to the cloud. This allows them to enjoy the benefits of a cloud-native architecture, such as high elasticity, low costs, and simplified management. Service Mesh also significantly reduces the cost of converting applications to a distributed architecture.

In just four months, Jiangxi Rural Credit successfully migrated its bank-enterprise reconciliation system from the traditional, centralized ESB architecture to an internal cloud platform. This successful migration was a critical technical step toward building a cloud-native infrastructure. It also laid the foundation for future upgrades and the evolution of their core systems to a distributed architecture.
