Business challenges
To build large-scale distributed applications, the company split its monolithic applications horizontally and vertically across different cluster nodes. To handle service and data calls, the company introduced distributed services such as service frameworks, message clusters, file storage, and caches. Splitting applications and adding distributed middleware improved performance and extensibility. However, this approach also created major challenges for developers:
With multiple teams working together, application dependencies were spread across different development environments. This made it very difficult for each developer to set up a complete environment.
After developing a module, developers found it difficult to debug or run unit tests locally. They had to deploy the module to a shared test environment for testing.
Traditional mocking tools were inadequate for testing and debugging in a distributed environment. This resulted in large amounts of unit test code and low code reuse. These tools also could not simulate the effects of complex network failures on applications.
Solutions
The goal was to retain the benefits of distributed services while providing the testing convenience of a monolithic application. The main methods were as follows:
Creating a testing and debugging framework to resolve service and data dependency issues caused by distributed services.
Building single-machine testing and debugging capabilities using a lightweight model to meet the local testing needs of developers and improve development efficiency.
Planning the number of front-end servers and implementing database sharding and table sharding for downstream databases.
Customer value
Tianhong Asset Management now runs 1,000 databases on the cloud platform. This is equivalent to running 1,000 clearing systems and real-time trading systems simultaneously. These systems can also scale in real time. The main advantage of cloud computing is its elastic processing power. On a typical day, six or seven front-end servers are sufficient to meet business needs. During the Double 11 shopping festival, the number of front-end servers increases to over 20. This supports more than 3,000 customer transactions per second. The company uses 50 RDS instances to run these 1,000 databases. If the database capacity reaches a bottleneck, the number of RDS instances can be increased to a maximum of 1,000.
