View the topology of the application

The Application Topology page displays the architecture and performance metrics of all business systems that are being monitored in the form of a table or a topology. By default, the information is displayed in the form of a topology.

Overview of topologies

A topology is a graph that shows the call relationships and dependencies between applications in a visualized manner. In a trace topology, each icon represents a node, which is an application that is called in the trace. Each connection line between two nodes represents a call relationship. A topology can display call relationships between services across applications. You can click a connection line or an arrow to view the call relationship between the relevant nodes.

The color of the connection line between two nodes reflects the time consumption of inter-application calls, which clearly shows the call status.

Topology items

A topology is a graph that shows the call relationships and dependencies between applications in a visualized manner. In a trace topology, each icon represents a node, which is an application that is called in the trace. You can drag and drop the items in the topology. The following table describes the topology items.

The line connecting two application nodes. It indicates the call relationship between two application nodes and is directional.

  • current workspace applications: allows you to view the overview of connection monitoring, including the number of requests, satisfaction, response time, error rate, and protocol. Click the connection point or the arrow on the connection to view the call details of the link between two application nodes, such as the number of requests and the average time consumed.

  • For other workspace applications, you cannot view the overview information of connection monitoring.

  • DB: You cannot view the overview information of connection monitoring.

  • MQ: You cannot view the overview information of connection monitoring.

Metric description

Distributed links are marked with different topology icon colors. Blue indicates a healthy application, yellow indicates an exception with the application, and red indicates an error in the application. This allows users to quickly focus on unhealthy applications, locate exceptional links, and complete troubleshooting.

In addition, you can hover the cursor over the node or node connection representing the application to see monitoring overview information, such as the number of requests and error rate. For the specific metric description, see the table below.

Health status

The thresholds of request error rate and time consumption satisfaction are aggregated for computing. The health status is as follows:

  • 1Health: The application is in a healthy state based on the error rate and time consumption satisfaction evaluation, that is, the request error rate and time consumption satisfaction are both within the thresholds.

  • 2Exception: The request error rate does not exceed the threshold, but the time consumption satisfaction exceeds the threshold.

  • 3Error: The request error rate exceeds the threshold and the time consumption satisfaction exceeds the threshold.

Number of requests

Total number of requests for the current application-related link, in times.

Response time

Response time for all requests for the current application-related link, in milliseconds.

Error Rate

Error rate of the current application-related link (Total number of errors/Total number of requests), in the unit of %.

Satisfaction

Each response of the application is timed and an interval is defined. For more information, see Configure a distributed link satisfaction.

Protocol

Protocol type of the current application-related link.

Average time consumption

Average time consumption of all requests for the current application-related link, in milliseconds.

View details of the application topology

The application topology shows the traces that are relevant to each application being monitored. On Application Topology page, you can view the upstream and downstream nodes of an application and the call relationships between nodes. The topology helps you identify the performance bottleneck of an application with efficiency.

  1. In the left-side navigation pane, click Distributed Trace > Application Topology.

  2. View the following information on this page:

    • The topology in a specific time range.

      Note
      • Use the time picker in the upper-right corner to specify a time range.

      • Hover the cursor over Legend to view the legend information of the topology element.

    • The number of requests, response time, and error rate of an application in a specific time range.

      Note

      Move the pointer over the icon of a node to view the relevant monitoring information.

    • The information about services calls for an application in a specific time range.

      Note
      • Click a point on a connection line or an arrow to view the details of the trace between two applications, such as the number of requests and average response time.

      • Click Query in the Real-time Trace column to be redirected to the Trace Query page for distributed traces.

You can use the buttons in the upper-right corner of the topology page to perform the following operations on the topology.

Search for an application in the topology

Enter the name of the application that you want to find in the search box and click 1.

Exact search by application name is supported. After the application is retrieved, the application details panel appears. You can view the performance metric data of the application in a specified time range in the panel.

Display the topology in graphic form

Clicklist (1).

Display the topology in list form

Clicktopology.

Configure link sampling

Clicksetting. For more information, see Configure trace sampling.

Zoom in or out the topology

Click 1 to proportionally zoom out the topology.

Click 1 to proportionally zoom in the topology.

Restore the topology to the default size

Click 1 to restore the topology to the default size, which is 100%.

Display the topology in the full screen mode

Click 1.

After you enter the full screen mode, click the icon again to exit the mode.

Specify a time range

Select a time range from the drop-down list in the upper right corner. For example, you can select 1 Hour.
