OceanBase helps you meet your scaling needs with configuration change features such as standard and temporary specification changes. This topic describes scaling scenarios.

Scale by modifying storage space

You can scale your resources by modifying the storage space. For more information, see Modify storage space.

You can expand the storage space in the following scenarios:

  • Your business accumulates more data over time and requires more storage.

  • If your storage capacity is low or you receive alert information, we recommend a storage capacity expansion.

Conversely, if your storage usage decreases after you migrate or delete historical data, you can reduce the storage space to scale in.

Modify instance specifications

You can scale your resources by modifying the instance specifications. For more information, see Modify instance specifications.

If your business requires higher performance, you can scale out by upgrading the instance specifications. Conversely, when traffic returns to normal after a peak period, you can scale in by downgrading the instance specifications.

Add or remove nodes

You can scale your resources by adding or removing nodes. For more information, see Add or remove nodes.

If your business accumulates more data over time and the tenant or cluster capacity is insufficient, you can scale out by adding nodes. When you add a node, a new node is added to each zone where the cluster is deployed. Conversely, to reduce the computing power of your cluster instance, you can scale in by removing nodes.

Increase log disk capacity

You can scale out by increasing the log disk capacity. For more information, see Increase log disk capacity.

You can increase the log disk capacity to extend the log retention period and store more log information. You should also increase the log disk capacity for a large cluster instance that has many small tenants.

Set up automatic storage scaling

If your business involves a large data volume or your workload fluctuates significantly and frequently, you can enable the automatic storage scaling feature. When storage is about to overflow, the cluster's storage space automatically expands to ensure the stability of your online services. For more information, see Set up automatic storage scaling.

Set up temporary specification changes

If your business involves small-scale, high-frequency promotions or other events, you can temporarily scale the cluster specifications and capacity. Incremental fees incurred during the scaling period are billed hourly. You can temporarily scale out the instance specifications and storage specifications, either separately or at the same time. For more information, see Set up temporary specification changes.

Modify tenant specifications

If a tenant's performance does not meet your business requirements, or if you are using a tenant with a small data volume as a staging environment, you can scale out or scale in by modifying the tenant's specifications. For more information, see Modify tenant resources.
