The measure phase of the Alibaba Cloud Well-Architected Framework connects learning with optimization. This phase uses systematic assessment tools and models to quantify the gap between your cloud architecture and business goals. It also detects potential threats and defines clear directions for improvement. This phase combines objective and subjective measures, which help you understand the maturity of your architecture. The results provide data and a basis for future optimization decisions.

Objective measures

Objective measures use the free governance maturity assessment feature in Cloud Governance Center. This feature provides a comprehensive assessment of your cloud governance maturity based on more than 260 metrics. It uses real-time Alibaba Cloud data to automatically detect potential threats in your cloud architecture. The feature can generate visual assessment reports, annotate issue priorities, and provide remediation advice and best practices. For more information, see Governance maturity assessment.

Objective measures help teams quickly and continuously identify significant architectural defects, provide an actionable improvement checklist, and reduce manual investigation costs.

Subjective measures

The Well-Architected Framework provides the free Well-Architected Tool to help you perform subjective measures. The Well-Architected Tool uses a structured questionnaire to guide you through a strategic review of your architecture's governance status. You can record key decisions, threats, and improvement plans. This creates a digital record of your governance process for regular reviews and iterations. Team members can collaborate on the assessment, which ensures that governance goals align with business needs. For more information, see Well-Architected Tool.

You can use subjective measures to assess the soundness of your architecture design. For example, you can check whether the design follows the principle of least privilege or supports scalability. You can also track governance progress across departments to ensure that optimizations are implemented.
