This topic describes the basic concepts of workspace groups and describes the relationship between workspaces and workspace groups.
Workspace groups
A workspace group (WorkspaceGroup) is an extension of a workspace (Workspace) that spans multiple regions. It groups and isolates resources within these regions. Different workspaces within the same workspace group can share a VPC. This reuses existing VPC resources, eliminating the need to create a new one.
Networks in multiple regions can be connected through Express Connect leased lines. For example, a production workspace group (WorkspaceGroup: prod) can contain two workspaces: a Shanghai production workspace (Workspace: prod_shanghai) and a Hangzhou production workspace (Workspace: prod_hangzhou).
SOFAStack supports attaching multiple workspaces to one workspace group for global, cross-region management. In the SOFAStack console, some products allow you to perform operations at the workspace group level, such as the unitized application service LHC, disaster recovery products, and monitoring products.
In an intra-city active-active architecture, a workspace group uses a single-region, dual-zone pattern. A one-to-one relationship is maintained between a workspace and a region, which allows the two zones in that region to use a single workspace.
In an active geo-redundancy architecture, a workspace group can span multiple regions. This enables cross-region application deployment.
Workspace groups and workspaces
Physically, a workspace cannot span across regions. Each workspace corresponds to only one VPC, and different workspaces reside in different VPC networks.
Workspace groups were created to overcome the regional limitations of workspaces. A workspace group is a combination of multiple workspaces and can span across regions. Additionally, a VPC in a single region can be attached to different workspaces to connect their VPC networks.
