Source database version

Updated at:

To ensure successful data migration, DTS checks the source database version during precheck.

DTS verifies that the source database version is compatible with the migration task before the task starts. If the check fails, upgrade the source database to a supported version and retry the precheck.

For the complete list of supported source database types and versions, see Migration scenarios.

Why the check fails

The precheck fails when the source database version does not meet one or more of the following requirements:

  • The version is below the minimum supported version for DTS migration tasks.

  • The version is incompatible with the target database version. In most cases, the target database version must be equal to or later than the source database version.

  • The database type has version-specific restrictions, such as support for full migration only (no incremental replication) below a certain version.

Version requirements by database type

The following table summarizes common version requirements. For the full list, see the supported database versions reference linked above.

Database type

Version requirement

Notes

MySQL

Target version ≥ source version (major version)

Minor version differences are allowed. For example, migrating from 5.6.5 to 5.6.4 is supported, but cross-minor-version migrations may surface compatibility issues.

SQL Server

Target version ≥ source version

Version-specific features may not be available on older targets.

PostgreSQL

Target version ≥ source version

Versions earlier than 10.x support full migration only; incremental replication is not available.

MongoDB

Target version ≥ source version

Replica set mode is required for incremental migration on most versions.

Oracle

See the supported versions reference for the exact minimum version

Incremental migration requires LogMiner or XStream. Version compatibility determines which method is available.

Note

For databases where both major and minor version numbers apply (such as MySQL 5.6.x and 5.7.x), DTS uses the major version number to determine upgrade compatibility. The minor version number is not restricted, but cross-minor-version migrations may surface compatibility issues as warnings.

Resolve the issue

  1. Check the current version of the source database.

    Run the appropriate version query for your database type:

    • MySQL / PostgreSQL: SELECT version();

    • SQL Server: SELECT @@VERSION;

    • MongoDB: db.version()

  2. Compare the current version against the supported versions listed in Migration scenarios.

  3. If the version is not supported, upgrade the source database to a supported version.

  4. After the upgrade, return to the DTS migration task and click Retry precheck.

    Warning

    Upgrading a production database requires careful planning. Back up your data before upgrading and test the upgrade in a non-production environment first. Contact your database administrator if you are unsure about the upgrade path.
