Cross-account domain renewal

If a domain is about to expire and you cannot access the owner's Alibaba Cloud account, you can use another Alibaba Cloud account to renew it. This action extends the domain's validity period but does not transfer its ownership or management rights.

Use cases

You may need to renew a domain in an emergency, for example, if you forget the login credentials for the owner's Alibaba Cloud account or lose access to its associated phone and email. Alibaba Cloud offers the cross-account domain renewal feature as an emergency solution to prevent business disruption when a domain expires.

If possible, first try to regain access to the original account. Use your phone or email on the Retrieve Login Name page, or click Forgot password on the Alibaba Cloud account login page.

Important

  • Domains managed by a reseller must be renewed through that reseller. You cannot use the cross-account domain renewal feature for these domains, nor can resellers use this feature to renew domains owned by other accounts.

  • A virtual operator account cannot be used for cross-account domain renewal.

  • You cannot use this feature to renew domains that have not completed real-name verification.

Procedure

The following procedure shows an example of using Alibaba Cloud account A to renew a domain owned by Alibaba Cloud account B.

  1. Log on to the Alibaba Cloud cross-account domain renewal platform with Alibaba Cloud account A.

    Note

    If you do not have an Alibaba Cloud account, you must register one first.

  2. Click Start Cross-account Renewal.

    The cross-account domain renewal page displays an overview of the process, which consists of four steps: Enter domain name → Confirm domain name → Submit order and pay → Renewal successful.

  3. Enter the domain name to renew, and then click Next.

    In the Enter the domain name to be renewed field, enter the complete domain name, such as example.cn.

  4. Select a renewal period, select the Wanwang Cross-account Domain Renewal Agreement checkbox, and then click Submit.

    Note

    Cross-account renewals support only a one-year renewal period per order. To renew a domain for multiple years, you must place separate orders.

  5. The system automatically deducts the fee from your account balance to complete the renewal.

After a successful cross-account domain renewal, the system notifies both the payer and the domain owner by email or SMS.

Renewal result confirmation

  1. Check the order status: Log on to the payer account and navigate to My Orders to confirm that the renewal order's status is Paid.

  2. Check the WHOIS information: Go to Alibaba Cloud Domain Name Search (WHOIS) to check the domain's new expiration date.

Note

  • Irreversible action: Successful domain renewal and redemption orders take effect immediately and cannot be reversed or refunded. Verify the domain name carefully before proceeding.

  • Payment method limitation: This feature supports payments only from your account balance.

  • Invoice ownership: After the order is complete, only the payer, not the domain owner, can request an invoice for the renewal.

    After payment is complete, you can request an invoice. For more information, see How to apply for an invoice.

  • Premium domain pricing: The cross-account domain renewal page displays renewal prices only for standard domains. The actual renewal price for a premium domain is the final price shown at checkout.

  • Invoice title limitation: Each Alibaba Cloud account supports only one valid invoice title.
