Before you begin

Create a registrant profile: On the Registrant Profiles page of the Alibaba Cloud Domain Names console, create a registrant profile and submit it for approval.

A registrant profile stores contact information about the domain name registrant (such as the name or organization name and the certificate number). You must associate a registrant profile when registering a domain name. Creating and verifying the profile in advance speeds up registration. For instructions on creating a registrant profile, see How to create a registrant profile.

A registrant profile must pass review after you submit it. Review usually takes 1 business day and, in some cases, 3 to 5 business days. You can use a profile to register a domain name, transfer domain name ownership, and perform similar operations only when its status is Succeeded. To check the review status, go to the Registrant Profiles page of the Domain Names console.

Register a domain name

Registering a standard domain name involves three steps. For domain names with special qualification requirements, such as .gov.cn, see the Register special types of domain names section.

Search for and select a domain name: Look up a domain name and check availability.
Confirm the order and complete the payment: Set the registration period, provide registrant identity information, and pay.
Verify the registration result and what to do next: Check the status of the domain name in the Domain Names console and complete the required configuration, such as DNS resolution.

Step 1: Search for and select a domain name

Go to the domain name registration platform, enter a domain name (for example, "wangwang.cc") in the search box, and click Search.

Domain names must follow specific naming rules, such as character type and length limits. For detailed rules, see Appendix: Naming rules for domain names.
Check if the domain name is available:
- If a Buy Now button appears, the domain name is available.
- If a TAKEN label appears, the domain name is already registered. To acquire it, click Make An Offer and delegate the purchase to Alibaba Cloud.
- If a Buy Now button appears, the domain name is registered but for sale. If you want this domain name, click Buy Now to complete the domain name transaction.

Important

Under the applicable CNNIC regulations, a domain name that contains "China", "national", "Chinese", "nationwide", "china", "chn", or "sino", or any other Chinese or English characters with the same meaning, must be registered by the corresponding rights holder. An individual or any entity that is not the rights holder cannot register such a domain name without authorization from the corresponding organization, and a registered domain name of this kind cannot be transferred to an individual through a transfer-in. Otherwise, the domain name fails the naming review.
If the name of the registering entity begins with "China", "National", "Chinese", or "Nationwide"
After the registrant profile passes identity verification and you have topped up your account with the first-year registration fee, submit the following materials to apply by choosing to submit a ticket. Credit control, coupons, and vouchers cannot be used for this payment. Whether the registration succeeds depends on the review result.
- A color photo or scan of the domain name registrant's organization's organization certificate, and a color photo or scan of the domain name registrant's contact person's ID card.
- A Domain Name Application Statement stamped with the official seal of the domain name registrant's organization. The statement must specify the domain name you are applying for, the registrant name, the registrant contact person's name, the contact information, and the intended use. The name and contact information on the identity-verified registrant profile must match the registrant contact person and contact information on the statement.

A domain name that contains content prohibited by the Measures for the Administration of Internet Domain Names of China cannot be submitted for registration and does not pass the domain name naming review. Such a domain name must be transferred to a registrar outside the Chinese mainland.

Alibaba Cloud offers a Smart Naming service. Enter keywords, and the system automatically recommends available domain name combinations to help you find a suitable name.

Step 2: Confirm the order and complete the payment

On the search results page, click Buy Now next to the domain name you want, add it to your list, and go to the order confirmation page.
On the order confirmation page, configure the following:
- Registration period: Specify a time from 1 to 10 years.
  
  For a core brand domain name, register for 5 to 10 years to reduce management costs and potentially improve search engine optimization (SEO).
- Registrant profile: The email address must complete email verification Verified, and the profile status must be Succeeded. If you have not created a registrant profile, click Create Registrant Profile and follow the on-screen guidance to create one and submit the identity verification materials.
  
  A registrant profile records the identity information of the domain name registrant, whether an individual or an organization. Under ICANN and registry requirements, every domain name must be associated with a registrant profile that has passed identity verification.
- Promo code (optional): Apply a promo code to get a promotional discount. For information about how to obtain a promo code, see How to get a domain name promo code.
Read and agree to the Domain Name Service Terms. Click Buy Now and complete the payment.

Important

Payment does not guarantee registration.

Payment submits your registration request to Alibaba Cloud, which then forwards it to the top-level domain registry. Some registrations, especially those for country code top-level domains such as .cn, require a naming review or qualification verification, which takes 1 to 3 business days. Registration is complete only when the status of the domain name changes to Normal.

Step 3: Verify the registration result and what to do next

Check if the domain name was registered successfully:

On the Domain Names page of the Domain Names console, if the domain name status is Normal, the registration is complete and the domain name can be used. Proceed with ICP filing and DNS resolution.
What to do next after the registration succeeds:
- Configure DNS resolution: After you register a domain name, configure DNS to point the domain name to your server's IP address so that users can reach your website or application. In the domain name list, click Resolve and add an A record or another type of DNS record. For detailed instructions, see Add DNS records for a website.
- Complete ICP filing: Websites serving the Chinese mainland must have an ICP filing before going online. Go to the Alibaba Cloud ICP Filing system to submit your application. For more information, see Quick start for personal website ICP filing.

Register domain names in bulk

If you need to register more than one domain name at a time, for example for brand protection or a batch business launch, use bulk registration instead of registering them one by one.

Step 1: Check domain name availability

Go to the Bulk Domain Search page, enter the domain names that you want to check (one per line, up to 1,000 domain names), select the suffixes (more than 60 suffixes are supported), and click Start Search to view the availability of these entries.

Step 2: Register domain names in bulk

Log on to the Bulk Registration page of the Domain Names console.
Enter the domain names (separated by commas, spaces, or line breaks, up to 10,000 domain names), or click Import File to import them in bulk.
Select a Registrant Profile, set the registration period (1 to 10 years), and configure DNS settings and status settings for the domain name as needed.
Click Next.

Step 3: Complete the payment

After the system creates the bulk registration task, you can:

Select a payment method (account balance or online payment) and complete the payment immediately.
Check the progress later on the Bulk Operation Records page, and click Pay Now to complete the payment.

Note

An unpaid bulk registration order remains valid for 7 days. Complete the payment within this period; otherwise, the order expires.

Register special types of domain names

For domain names with the ".Trademark" and ".gov.cn" suffixes, the registration qualifications and procedures are as follows.

".Trademark" domain names

Prerequisites

Before registering a ".Trademark" domain name, make sure you have a valid trademark registration certificate.

Important

When reviewing a ".Trademark" domain name, the registry checks if your trademark registration certificate meets the requirements. If it does not, the registration fails.

If you do not have a trademark registration certificate that meets the requirements, first apply for trademark registration through Alibaba Cloud Trademark Service. To choose a suitable trademark registration method, see Trademark intelligent registration guide.

Procedure

Search for the domain name
1. Log on to the ".Trademark" domain name registration page, enter the domain name that you want to register, and click Search.
2. In the search results, click Buy Now.
  
  If the search result is TAKEN, the domain name is already registered by someone else and you must choose a different one.
Confirm the order

On the Confirm Order page, select the registration period and a registrant profile whose email has passed email verification and whose identity verification has succeeded, and then submit the payment.

After you complete the payment, the domain name registration order briefly shows the Processing status. When the status changes to Completed, the domain name is registered.

Note

A domain name registration must be reported to the registry promptly, and instructions are sent to the registry only after payment is complete, so pay as soon as possible after placing the order. Account balance, Alipay, online banking, and other payment methods are supported. Party and government agency ".gov.cn" domain names

".gov.cn" domain names can only be registered by party and government agencies in China or entities that perform their functions. These entities must have an organization code certificate and be classified as government legal persons.

Registering and unregistering ".gov.cn" domain names	Notes
Register a ".gov.cn" domain name	To apply for a ".gov.cn" domain name registration, you must first submit materials for a preliminary review. The registering entity must be a party or government agency, or an entity that legally performs the functions of a party or government agency. You must submit the domain name registration application form stamped with the official seal of the registering entity, organization certification documents, and other required materials and information to the domain name registrar. If the relevant national authorities have other regulations, you must comply with them. Note After the preliminary review materials are approved, the system automatically generates the Domain Name Registration Information Application Form.
Unregister a ".gov.cn" domain name	To unregister a ".gov.cn" domain name that was applied for after September 2018, follow the unregistration process corresponding to your registering entity as described in this topic. To unregister a ".gov.cn" domain name that was applied for before September 2018, you must submit a ticket to Alibaba Cloud to apply for the unregistration. The content of the ticket varies based on your specific situation. We recommend that you first contact an Alibaba Cloud after-sales engineer to explain your unregistration needs and the current status of the domain name. The engineer will provide a content template for you to use when submitting the unregistration ticket.

Required materials for ".gov.cn" domain name registration

Provide the following materials:
- Registrant identity certificate: A color scan of the original organization code certificate or Unified Social Credit Code certificate.
- Contact person identity certificate: A color scan of the front and back of the original ID card, combined into a single image file.
Note
The domain name registration contact must be an employee of the registrant's organization.

After the preliminary review for the ".gov.cn" domain name registration passes, the system generates the Domain Name Registration Information Application Form. Download, fill out, and stamp the form with your official seal, and then upload it to the system.

Steps to register a ".gov.cn" domain name

Search for the domain name.
1. Log on to the Alibaba Cloud Domain Names console.
2. On the Alibaba Cloud domain name registration page, enter the prefix of the domain name that you want to register in the search box, select the ".gov.cn" suffix, and click Search Domain Name.
On the search domain name page, click Apply next to the domain name to start submitting the application materials for the ".gov.cn" domain name.
Fill in and upload the preliminary review materials for the ".gov.cn" registration as required on the page, and click Submit For Review in the lower-left corner.
After the preliminary review materials are approved, the system automatically generates the .gov.cn Domain Name Registration Application Form. Check for system notifications.
Download and print the .gov.cn Domain Name Registration Application Form, fill in the remaining information, and stamp it with the official seal of the applying entity. Take a photo or scan the completed and stamped application form, and upload it to the system.

Note
Upload a clear and complete image of the application form. Common formats such as JPG and PNG are supported. The file size must be between 55 KB and 10 MB.
After you confirm that the domain name information is correct, select the checkbox to agree to the Domain Name Service Terms and submit the application. You are directed to the Order Confirmation page to pay. Vouchers cannot be used for .gov.cn domain name registration because of system limitations. Select a suitable payment method to complete the order.
After the domain name order is submitted, the domain name registry (CNNIC) will review the materials and call you to verify your registration intent. Make sure your contact phone number is reachable.
After the registry approves the application, the domain name is successfully registered.

Note
If the registry review fails, the domain name registration fails, and the corresponding order will be refunded.

How to unregister a ".gov.cn" domain name

When such entities apply to unregister a ".gov.cn" domain name, they must submit a valid domain name unregistration application form and identity certification materials to a domain name registrar, such as Alibaba Cloud, as required by the Implementing Rules of Domain Name Registration of CNNIC. The registrar will review the materials. If the materials are approved, the domain name will be unregistered.

Note

If the entity's name has changed, you can provide a name change document (such as a red-header document) or other valid proof.

".gov.cn" registration FAQ

How do I correctly fill out the .gov.cn Domain Name Registration Application Form?

Responsibilities description: Show how the domain name relates to the functions of your organization, for example, "Providing agricultural convenience services for farmers in Daye City". This helps the registry review your application.
Filling out the PDF: If you cannot edit the application form PDF, print it, fill it in by hand, and then take a photo or scan it and upload it to the system.
Checking the review progress: After the preliminary review passes, the system generates the application form automatically. After you upload the stamped document, the registry calls you to verify your registration intent. You can check the review progress in the domain name list of the Domain Names console. You do not need to wait for an SMS notification. Keep your contact phone number reachable.
Registration period: You can register a .gov.cn domain name for one year first and then renew it as usual.

When registering a ".gov.cn" domain name, I receive the prompt "Please register the corresponding GOV domain name as required by the 'Notice of the General Office of the State Council on Strengthening the Management of Government Website Domain Names'. This registration application is rejected."

Possible cause: You did not use the registration channel corresponding to your entity type to register the ".gov.cn" domain name. Instead, you registered it directly on Alibaba Cloud.
Solution: After the naming review for the ".gov.cn" domain name fails, wait for the refund. Then, follow the requirements in the Notice of the General Office of the State Council on Strengthening the Management of Government Website Domain Names to contact your superior entity to register the ".gov.cn" domain name.

When registering a ".gov.cn" domain name, I receive the prompt "Applying entities that are not of the 'government agency' type cannot apply to register '.gov.cn' domain names."

Possible cause: According to the "Administrative Measures for Internet Domain Names in China", .gov.cn domain names are exclusively for state agencies, which must provide a government legal person certificate and government approval documents. Non-state agencies are not allowed to register.
Solution: If your organization is not a "government agency" but performs administrative functions, such as a public institution or social group, submit supplementary certification materials. Examples include a document certifying that the entity is managed with reference to civil service standards or a red-header document indicating administrative management functions. Submit these materials through a domain name ticket and contact an after-sales engineer for assistance.

The naming review for a ".gov.cn" domain name registration failed, and the system prompts that the registrant contact or registration contact must be an employee of the applying entity.

Possible cause: The registration contacts (primary and secondary) for a ".gov.cn" domain name must be employees of the registrant's organization.
Solution: When creating the domain name registration information, make sure to enter current employees of the organization as the registration contacts. The names, departments, and positions of the primary and secondary contacts in the domain name registration application form must be filled in truthfully and completely.

Billing

Registration fees: Domain name prices depend on the TLD and registration period. You can view the prices for all domain names available for registration on Alibaba Cloud on the Domain Name Pricing page.
Paid deletion for unwanted domain names:
- Some TLDs support paid deletion during the Add Grace Period (AGP), typically within 3 to 5 days of registration.
- Go to the Bulk Operations - Batch Paid Deletion page and click View Deletion Fee Details to check deletion eligibility and fees.
  
  Important
  Deletion incurs a non-refundable service fee, but the registration fee is refunded. Not all TLDs support this feature, and fees vary.

What to do next

Auto-renewal: Enable the automatic renewal feature for a core business domain name, so that a missed renewal never causes you to lose the domain name or interrupt your business.
Domain name security locks: For important domain names, enable the transfer lock and update lock to prevent unauthorized transfers or changes.
ICP filing: Websites hosted in the Chinese mainland require ICP filing. Non-filed domain names are blocked.

FAQs

When registering a domain name, I receive the prompt "The domain name is restricted and cannot be registered."

Register a different domain name or register on the international site. If a domain name contains words such as "China", "National", "Chinese", or "Nationwide", or other Chinese or English characters with the same meaning, such as "china", "chn", or "sino", the corresponding rights holder must apply for the domain name. Adding a hyphen (-) to a restricted keyword does not change the restriction classification.
I have already paid. Why can't I find my domain name in the domain list?

Go to the Enterprise Service Product Orders page and check if the Order Status of the domain name purchase is Successful.

Alibaba Cloud reviews orders on the same day. If registration information is incorrect, it will be corrected and resubmitted to the registry. This process typically completes within one business day.
- Possible cause: Your account has overdue payments. The system first applied the payment for the current domain name registration to the outstanding balance, causing the new registration to fail.
  
  Solution: Log on to your Alibaba Cloud account. Go to Expenses and costs > Billing details to check your spending records, and then try to purchase the domain name again.
- Possible cause: The domain name you are trying to register is a trademark-protected or premium domain name.
  
  Solution: If a registration fails for this reason, the payment is refunded to your original payment method. You can then register a different domain name.
After completing payment for a domain name registration, the page has been showing a Registry Review in Progress status for hours without any changes. Do I need to repurchase the domain name?

No, you do not need to repurchase the domain name. The Registry Review in Progress status remaining unchanged for extended periods (hours or even longer) is normal behavior. The review is conducted by the domain name registry, not Alibaba Cloud, and Alibaba Cloud cannot retrieve real-time progress from the registry, so the page does not automatically refresh. You can safely close the page — your registration request has already been submitted to the registry, and there is no need to repurchase or resubmit. After the review is complete, the system automatically updates the status of the domain name and notifies you by SMS. You can check the current registration status on the Domain Names page of the Domain Names console.
How do I view my domain name order information?

Navigate to the Enterprise Service Product Orders page and view your domain name order information. This includes the price, order status, purchase time, and more.
What should I do if payment was successful but I cannot find the domain name in the list, or it shows as failed?
- Reason: Successful payment does not mean the domain name is registered. After payment, the domain name still needs to pass the registry's naming review or qualification verification, which typically takes 1–3 business days. If the domain name contains sensitive words, is reserved by the registry, or is a premium/trademark-protected domain name, registration may fail.
- Refund rules: For a .cn or another CNNIC domain name, if the review fails, a refund is typically processed automatically. For a .com or another international domain name, if registration fails because of a naming violation, such as containing a sensitive word, the fee may not be refundable. Avoid using a sensitive word before registration.
- WHOIS shows the domain name is available but Alibaba Cloud says it is registered: This is caused by data synchronization delays. In reality, the domain name has already been registered with another registrar. We recommend choosing a different domain name.
- How to check: Visit the Enterprise Service Product Orders page to view your order status, or check the domain name status changes in the Domain Names console.
What should I do if I cannot complete payment, receive a risk warning, or encounter errors when purchasing a domain name?
- Browser and environment issues: If you encounter errors such as "Product data error," "500 error," "Region/Province cannot be selected," or "Template checkbox is unresponsive," try clearing your browser cache, disabling VPN/proxy/browser extensions, or switching to a different browser (Google Chrome recommended).
- Add-on service conflicts: Selecting add-on services such as an SSL certificate, Enterprise Email, or ICP Filing Assistant during domain name registration can cause order validation conflicts and errors such as "Module is invalid", "Template is invalid", "Payment error", or "Required module not selected". Deselect all non-essential options, such as the SSL certificate, complimentary email, and ICP Filing Assistant, on the order page and pay for the domain name only. You can buy or enable these services separately after the domain name is registered.
  
  If a complimentary email selection causes a Chinese domain name registration to fail or triggers "Please enter a valid URL", deselect the email option and place the order again.
- Payment risk control: If you see "Payment error — null," "Risk detected," or cannot open the Alipay payment page, use the Alibaba Cloud Self-Service Diagnostic Tool to diagnose the issue and submit an appeal. If your appeal is rejected, you will need to provide a photo of your ID card and transaction/payment records from the last 30 days.
- Alipay redirect issue: If Alipay redirects directly to the password entry page instead of showing the QR code for scanning, exit your Alipay account and try again.
- Virtual merchant account restrictions: Virtual merchant accounts do not support direct domain name purchases. You need to register a direct Alibaba Cloud customer account to proceed.
Can I submit an ICP filing right after I buy a domain name?

No. The domain name must pass identity verification first. After the verification information is synchronized to the MIIT system, which usually takes 2 to 3 business days, you can submit the ICP filing application. The domain name holder information must match the ICP filing entity information; otherwise, the filing application is rejected.
Why does my domain name registration fail with a prompt to enter a phone number, but I cannot find where to enter it on the registration page?

This issue usually occurs because you have not created a registrant profile that has passed identity verification, or because the existing profile does not include a mobile phone number. Domain name registration requires a profile that has passed identity verification, and the phone number is entered in the profile, not on the domain name registration page.

To resolve this issue:
1. Go to the Registrant Profiles page of the Domain Names console, create a profile, enter the holder information including the mobile phone number, and upload the certificate materials. For detailed instructions, see How to create a registrant profile.
2. Submit the profile and wait for identity verification to pass. Verification usually takes 1 business day and, in some cases, up to 3 to 5 business days.
3. After verification passes, return to the domain name registration page and select the verified profile from the Registrant Profile drop-down list.
4. Submit the domain name registration order again.
Note
A registrant profile is a prerequisite for domain name registration, so create it and complete identity verification in advance. If you have already created a profile but it has no mobile phone number, edit the profile on the Registrant Profiles page to add the number.

Appendix: Naming rules for domain names

Different TLDs have different naming rules. You must follow the rules to pass the naming review. The naming rules for a Chinese domain name, an English domain name, and a special domain name, for example ".hk".

Chinese domain names

When you register a Chinese domain name, follow these naming rules:

A Chinese domain name must contain at least one Chinese character. The rest can include English letters (a to z, case-insensitive), numbers (0 to 9), and hyphens (-).
You can only register either the simplified or traditional Chinese version.
Note
- Most Registries treat simplified and traditional Chinese characters as equivalent. For the same domain name, you can only register either the simplified or the traditional Chinese version. Register the version you intend to use.
- If you have registered the simplified Chinese version of a domain name and need to use the traditional Chinese version, you must first cancel the simplified domain name and then register the traditional one, and vice versa. To cancel a domain name, submit a ticket .
  
  After you cancel a domain name, another party may register it. Proceed with caution.
The domain name cannot begin or end with an invalid character, such as a hyphen (-), plus sign (+), at sign (@), ampersand (&), or space.
A hyphen (-) cannot be registered on its own and cannot be placed at the beginning or the end. Different top-level domains have different rules for whether a hyphen can appear consecutively, so the registry system is the final authority.
Note
- For a generic top-level domain such as .com or .net, a hyphen (-) cannot appear consecutively in the second and third characters of the domain name prefix, but it can appear consecutively elsewhere.
The domain name can contain a maximum of 63 characters.
Some TLDs, such as .com.cn, .net.cn, and .org.cn, do not support Chinese SLDs.

English domain names

When you register an English domain name, follow these naming rules:

You can only use English letters (a to z, case-insensitive), numbers (0 to 9), and hyphens (-). Spaces and special characters such as !$&? are not supported.
A hyphen (-) cannot be registered on its own and cannot be placed at the beginning or the end. Different top-level domains have different rules for whether a hyphen can appear consecutively, so the registry system is the final authority.
Note
- For a generic top-level domain such as .com or .net, a hyphen (-) cannot appear consecutively in the second and third characters of the domain name prefix, but it can appear consecutively elsewhere.
The domain name can contain a maximum of 63 characters.

".hk" domain names

Note

Second-level domain ("***.hk") registration: Any entity or individual from Hong Kong (China), the Chinese mainland, or outside China can apply to register a second-level domain. No certification documents are required, except for the banking and insurance industries.
Third-level domain ("***.com.hk", etc.) registration: Not supported.

When you register a ".hk" domain name, follow these naming rules.

Naming rules for Chinese ".hk" domain names
- A Chinese domain name must contain at least one Chinese character. The rest can include English letters (a to z, case-insensitive), numbers (0 to 9), and hyphens (-).
- A hyphen (-) cannot appear at the beginning, at the end, or as the third and fourth characters.
- The total number of characters cannot exceed 15.
Naming rules for English ".hk" domain names

An English ".hk" domain name follows the same naming rules as any other English domain. For more information, see Naming rules for an English domain name prefix.
General naming restrictions for ".hk" domain names
- Bank: If the domain name contains "bank" or its Chinese equivalent (银行), any of their English or Chinese derivatives, the letters "b", "a", "n", "k" in sequence, or the Chinese characters "银" or "行", you must provide written consent from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.
- Insurance: Per the Hong Kong Insurance Companies Ordinance, if the domain name contains "insurance", "assurance", or their Chinese equivalent (保险), you must provide written consent from the Hong Kong Insurance Authority.
- Government: The registration authority rejects public applications for domain names that contain "government", its Chinese equivalent (政府), or related words.
- Reserved domain names: In addition to already registered domain names, the ".hk" domain name registry has reserved some domain names that are not available for registration. The list of reserved domain names is subject to the registry's regulations.

.cn, .china, .company, and .network domain names

According to the Notice on the Adjustments of Domain Name Audit Standards issued by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Chinese domain names that use the .china, .cn, .company, or .network suffix and contain "China", "National", "Chinese", or "Nationwide" must be registered by their respective rights holders. Individuals or non-rights holders are not allowed to register them without authorization.

After successful registration, identity verification materials must be submitted within 5 days. The domain name can only be used after the entity's qualification verification is approved. If an individual or an entity other than the rights holder makes the request, CNNIC will reject the qualification verification and delete the domain name directly.

For example, to register chinalawyersassociation.cn, the request must be made by the rights holder, China Lawyers Association.

CNNIC has authorized Alibaba Cloud to provide registration services for the .cn, .china, .company, and .network suffixes. The following requirements apply to users who register these suffixes on the Alibaba Cloud China site and international site.
