When your domain contact information changes, update the domain information promptly to ensure accuracy. This guide helps you complete the modification process.

Background information

What is modifying other domain information?

Modifying domain information means updating contact details such as the administrator, billing contact, and technical contact. It does not include changing the registrant.

Modification requirements

  • The domain appears in the Domain Names list in the Alibaba Cloud console.

  • The domain is within its validity period and has not entered the renewal grace period.

  • The domain does not have an update lock enabled.

About changing the registrant

To change the registrant information or transfer domain ownership, see Modify registrant information (ownership transfer).

Note

According to the policy of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), you cannot transfer a domain out within 60 days after changing the registrant information. If you plan to transfer the domain out of Alibaba Cloud later, check the box labeled Disable “Block transfer-out from Alibaba Cloud for 60 days after successful domain information modification” during the update.

Modify information for a single domain

  1. Log on to the Alibaba Cloud Domain Names console.

  2. On the Domain Names List page, find the domain you want to update and click Manage in the Actions column.

  3. In the navigation pane on the left, click Modify Other Domain Information.

  4. Select the tab for Administrator Information, Billing Contact Information, or Technical Contact Information based on your needs.

  5. Fill in the required fields as prompted and click Save to complete the update.

Contact information for the administrator, billing contact, and technical contact is independent of the registrant information. The registrant information must match the identity verification documents (such as a business license or ID card). However, contact fields can contain other valid and accurate personal information and do not need to match the registrant or the legal representative listed on the business license.

Note

Domain information updates take effect in real time. Some operations may experience slight delays due to systems at the registry or registrar.

Modify information for multiple domains

To update information for multiple domains under your Alibaba Cloud account at once, follow this procedure.

Note

Batch modification is not supported in the following cases:

  • .gov.cn domains, generic web addresses, .hk domains, Country Code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs), and domains registered outside China.

  • Domains currently undergoing identity verification, transfer-out, arbitration, or freeze, or domains with domain security lock enabled.

  • CNNIC domain names and international domain names require slightly different modification methods. Handle them separately by selecting each type for batch operations.

  1. Log on to the Alibaba Cloud Domain Names console.

  2. In the Domain Names List, select multiple domains you want to update, then choose More > Modify Domain Information (Ownership Transfer).

  3. In the Select Fields to Modify section, choose to update Administrator Information, Billing Contact Information, or Technical Contact Information.

  4. Fill in the required fields as prompted and click Save to complete the update.

Note

Domain information updates take effect in real time. Some operations may experience slight delays due to systems at the registry or registrar.

FAQ

Domain information modification failed with the error: “Contact is empty”

  • Possible cause: The domain was registered a long time ago. Its registration data is historical and may be missing fields compared to current domain registration and identity verification rules.

  • Solution:

    1. Create a registrant information template and complete identity verification for the template. For more information, see Domain identity verification procedure.

      Note

If you already have a verified information template, skip this step.

    2. Use batch domain ownership transfer to fill in the missing information. For more information, see Generic domain ownership transfer (batch domains).

    3. After the ownership transfer succeeds, modify the domain information.
