This topic covers block storage billing, including purchasing, pricing, billing rules for various disk types, the impact of configuration changes, and billing examples.
Purchase and pricing
Block storage is available in three categories: cloud disks (including the ESSD series and previous-generation cloud disks), local disks, and elastic ephemeral disks.
The instance fee includes the cost of local disks.
Cloud disks
To purchase a cloud disk, go to the cloud disk purchase page. Pricing: The price of the same cloud disk category may vary by region. For more information, see the Block Storage Pricing page page.
Elastic ephemeral disks
To purchase an elastic ephemeral disk, go to the elastic ephemeral disk purchase page. Pricing: The price of the same elastic ephemeral disk category may vary by region. For more information, see the Block Storage Pricing page page.
For more information about block storage, see Block storage overview.
Cloud disk billing
Billing rules
Billable item | Applicable disk category | Billing rule | Billing method |
Disk capacity | All cloud disks | Billing for a cloud disk starts at its creation and continues regardless of its attachment status or usage. |
|
Provisioned performance | ESSD AutoPL disks and ESSD PL-X disks only | For an ESSD AutoPL disk or an ESSD PL-X disk, if you enable provisioned performance by configuring IOPS, you are charged an additional fee for the provisioned performance. Fees are calculated per second and billed hourly. A billable record is generated after each calculation, but its delivery may be delayed. Note If the calculated fee for provisioned IOPS is less than CNY 0.001, the fee is displayed as CNY 0/hour in the console. The actual fee is subject to your final bill. | Pay-as-you-go: Unit price of provisioned performance × Provisioned IOPS × Billing duration |
Burst performance | ESSD AutoPL disks only | For an ESSD AutoPL disk with burst performance enabled (default), you are charged for any bursts that occur. Fees are billed hourly based on resource usage. A billable record is generated after each hourly calculation, but the record may be delayed. The total burst I/O is calculated on an hourly basis based on the following rules: Note

Billing methods
The available billing methods for a cloud disk depend on its creation method:
Create a cloud disk when you create an ECS instance: The disk's billing method is the same as the instance's. Both subscription and pay-as-you-go are supported.
Create a cloud disk for an existing ECS instance:
For a subscription ECS instance, you can attach subscription and pay-as-you-go cloud disks.
For a pay-as-you-go ECS instance, you can attach only pay-as-you-go cloud disks.
Create a standalone cloud disk without attaching it to an ECS instance: Only the pay-as-you-go billing method is supported.
Change cloud disk billing method
If the current billing method for your cloud disk no longer meets your needs, you can change it. For more information, see Change the billing method of a cloud disk.
Billing for modified cloud disk configurations
Modifying a cloud disk may incur additional fees. The table below provides details.
Operation | Description | Documentation |
Resize a cloud disk | After you resize a cloud disk, you are charged for the added capacity. Note You cannot change the billing method of a cloud disk when you resize it.
Change the disk category of a cloud disk | After you change the disk category, the disk is billed based on the new category.
Modify the performance level of an ESSD | After you upgrade the performance level of an ESSD, the disk is billed based on the new performance level.
Modify the performance settings of an ESSD AutoPL disk | If you enable provisioned performance and burst performance or modify the provisioned IOPS, the disk is billed based on the new performance settings. |
Local disk billing
Local disks are bound to specific instance types and cannot be purchased separately. Their cost is included in the fee for the instance. For more information about local disks, see Local disks.
Elastic ephemeral disk billing
Billing rules
Billing for an elastic ephemeral disk is based on capacity and starts at creation.
Subscription: Elastic ephemeral disk capacity (GiB) × Unit price × Subscription duration
Pay-as-you-go: Elastic ephemeral disk capacity (GiB) × Unit price × Billing duration
Billing methods
The supported billing methods for elastic ephemeral disks vary based on how they are created:
Create an elastic ephemeral disk when you create an ECS instance: The disk's billing method is the same as the instance's. Both subscription and pay-as-you-go are supported.
Create an elastic ephemeral disk for an existing ECS instance:
For a subscription ECS instance, you can attach subscription and pay-as-you-go elastic ephemeral disks.
For a pay-as-you-go ECS instance, you can attach only pay-as-you-go elastic ephemeral disks.
Create a standalone elastic ephemeral disk without attaching it to an ECS instance: Only the pay-as-you-go billing method is supported.
Billing examples
Example 1: ESSD cloud disks
Assume that you purchase two cloud disks (one system disk and one data disk) when you create an instance in the China (Hangzhou) region. The specifications are as follows:
System disk: a 50 GiB ESSD PL0 cloud disk.
Data disk: a 100 GiB ESSD PL1 cloud disk.
The following table describes how the cloud disks are billed.
The examples are for reference only. Actual pricing and fees are subject to your bill.
