Modify a disk category

To address performance bottlenecks or manage costs as your business grows, you can modify a disk's category online without service interruption.

Prerequisites

  • Unsupported block storage types: basic disks, elastic ephemeral disks, and local disks.

  • Instance type limitations: You cannot modify the disk category if its attached instance type does not support the target category.

  • Disk status limitations:

    • When used as a data disk, the disk must be in the In Use or Unattached state.

    • When used as a system disk, the disk must be in the In Use state.

  • Disk configuration limitations: You cannot modify the configuration of a disk if the multi-attach feature is enabled.

    Go to the ECS console - Block Storage - Disks page. Click the ID of the target disk to open its details page. If Multi-attach is displayed as Yes, the feature is enabled.

Procedure

Important

To ensure data security, we recommend that you create a snapshot of the disk before you modify its configuration.

  1. Go to ECS console - Block Storage. In the top navigation bar, select the target region and resource group.

  2. In the Actions column for the target disk, choose Change Configuration.

  3. In the Change Configuration dialog box, select a New Disk Category.

    • Locally redundant disks: Data is stored redundantly on different devices within a single Availability Zone (AZ). This protects against hardware failures and ensures data durability and availability.

    • Zone-redundant disks: In regions with three or more Availability Zones, data is stored redundantly across AZs to provide disaster recovery from a single AZ failure. This ensures that data remains accessible even if one AZ becomes unavailable.

    ESSDs

    ESSDs are locally redundant disks.

    • You can directly modify an ESSD at performance level 0 (PL0) to one of the following disk categories:

      • ESSD at PL1, PL2, or PL3

      • ESSD AutoPL disk

      • Zone-redundant ESSD

        This modification is supported only for data disks.
    • For ESSDs at PL1, PL2, and PL3, the supported modifications depend on the billing method:

      • If the original disk has a pay-as-you-go billing method:

        • You can switch among PL1, PL2, and PL3.

        • You can directly modify the disk to an ESSD AutoPL disk.

        • You can modify only an ESSD at PL1 to a Zone-redundant ESSD.

          This modification is supported only for data disks.
      • If the original disk has a subscription billing method, you can only upgrade to a higher performance configuration.

        • Modify an ESSD at PL1 to an ESSD at PL2.

        • Modify an ESSD at PL1 to an ESSD at PL3.

        • Modify an ESSD at PL2 to an ESSD at PL3.

        • Modify an ESSD at PL1 to an ESSD AutoPL disk.

        • You can modify an ESSD data disk at PL1 to a Zone-redundant ESSD.

    ESSD AutoPL disks

    These are locally redundant disks. You can directly modify them to one of the following categories:

    • ESSD AutoPL disk

      During the modification, you can change the provisioned performance but not the performance burst. You can adjust the performance burst after the modification completes.

    • Zone-redundant ESSD

      • When you modify a disk to a Zone-redundant ESSD, you must disable provisioned performance and performance burst.

        Zone-redundant ESSDs and ESSD AutoPL disks have different performance caps. Disabling provisioned performance and performance burst may affect your services. Before you proceed, review the block storage performance documentation to ensure that the new configuration meets your business requirements.
      • This modification is supported only for data disks.

    Zone-redundant ESSDs

    These are zone-redundant disks.

    1. Zone.

      • If the disk is In Use, this option is grayed out. The new locally redundant disk resides in the same Availability Zone as the attached instance.

      • If the disk is Unattached, the new locally redundant disk can be attached only to instances in the selected Availability Zone.

    2. Select a New Disk Category.

      You can directly modify a Zone-redundant ESSD to one of the following disk categories:

      • ESSD at PL1, PL2, or PL3

      • ESSD AutoPL disk

    ESSD Entry disks

    These are locally redundant disks. You can directly modify them to one of the following categories:

    • ESSD at PL0, PL1, PL2, or PL3

    • ESSD AutoPL disk

    • Zone-redundant ESSD

      This modification is supported only for data disks.

    Ultra disks

    These are locally redundant disks. You can directly modify them to one of the following categories:

    • standard SSD

    • ESSD Entry disk

      These disks can be attached only to instances of the u1 general-purpose instance family and e economy instance family.
    • ESSD at PL0, PL1, PL2, or PL3

    • ESSD AutoPL disk

    Standard SSDs

    These are locally redundant disks. You can directly modify them to one of the following categories:

    • ESSD at PL1, PL2, or PL3

    • ESSD AutoPL disk

    ESSD PL-X disks

    These are locally redundant disks.

    • You cannot modify them to other disk categories. You can only modify the provisioned IOPS.

    • You cannot modify other disks to ESSD PL-X disks.

  4. Confirm the fees and click OK.

  5. Verify the result.

    Go to the ECS console - Tasks & Events page. When the status of the Change Disk Type task changes to Completed, return to the disk list to verify the new disk category.

    The modification time varies based on the disk's throughput, storage capacity, and original category. Allow the process to complete.
  6. (Conditional) If you modify a disk to an ESSD at PL3, you must reattach the disk or restart the instance after the modification completes to achieve its optimal performance. This action affects only performance and does not impact data reliability.

Considerations for production environments

  • Performance assessment before modification:

    Different disk categories have different performance caps. A category modification may affect your services. Before you proceed, review the block storage performance documentation to ensure that the new configuration meets your business requirements.

  • Performance impact during modification:

    The disk's read and write performance may be slightly affected during the modification, without service interruption or data loss. To minimize the impact on your business, we recommend that you perform this operation during off-peak hours.

Quotas and limitations

  • You cannot perform the following operations while a configuration is being modified:

    • Canceling the configuration modification

    • Creating snapshots

    • Resizing disks

    • Formatting partitions

    • Re-initializing disks

    • Rolling back disks by using snapshots

    • Attaching and detaching disks

    • Editing properties

    • Changing the operating system

    • Setting snapshot policies

    • Modifying the ESSD performance level

  • Disk capacity limitations: Different ESSD performance levels have minimum capacity requirements. If you cannot select a higher performance level when modifying a disk to an ESSD, you must first resize the disk and then try again.

  • Task limit: A single account can run a maximum of 50 concurrent disk category modification tasks in the same region.

  • Modification interval limitations:

    • Modifying only the performance level of an ESSD: No interval limit.

    • Modifying only the provisioned IOPS of an ESSD AutoPL disk or an ESSD PL-X disk: You must wait at least 1 hour before modifying the same disk again.

    • Modifying a disk from another category to an ESSD AutoPL disk:

      • If you adjust the provisioned IOPS, you must wait at least 1 hour before modifying the same disk again.

      • If you do not adjust the provisioned IOPS, you can perform another modification immediately after the first one. You must wait at least 1 hour before any subsequent modifications to the same disk.

    • All other disk category modifications: You must wait at least 6 hours before modifying the same disk again.

Billing

After a disk category is modified, the following billing rules apply:

  • Pay-as-you-go disks: You are billed based on the new disk category, and the new rate takes effect immediately.

  • Subscription disks: You must pay the price difference for the remaining billing cycle. This difference is based on the price gap between the old and new configurations and the remaining subscription duration, which is calculated from 00:00 of the following day.

FAQ

  • Ultra disk to Zone-redundant ESSD

    • As a system disk: Modification is not supported.

    • As a data disk: Direct modification is not supported. You must first modify the disk to an ESSD at PL0/PL1 or an ESSD AutoPL disk, and then modify it to a Zone-redundant ESSD.

  • Standard SSD to Zone-redundant ESSD

    • As a system disk: Modification is not supported.

    • As a data disk: Direct modification is not supported. You must first modify the disk to an ESSD at PL1 or an ESSD AutoPL disk, and then modify it to a Zone-redundant ESSD.

  • ESSD (PL2/PL3) to Zone-redundant ESSD

    • As a system disk: Modification is not supported.

    • As a data disk: Direct modification is not supported. You must first modify the disk to an ESSD at PL1 or an ESSD AutoPL disk, and then modify it to a Zone-redundant ESSD.
