Schedule periodic snapshots for cloud disks to prevent data loss and enable cross-region disaster recovery.
Prerequisites
The ECS snapshot service is activated.
Procedure
If no snapshot policies exist in the current region, the system creates a default policy (default_policy) when you first assign a policy to a cloud disk. You can use the default policy or create a custom one.
-
In the upper-left corner of the page, select a region and resource group.
-
On the Automatic Snapshot Policies tab, click Create Automatic Snapshot Policy.
-
On the Create Automatic Snapshot Policy page, configure the parameters and click OK.
Policy details
Configure the policy name, execution schedule, and snapshot retention period.
Parameter
Description
Policy Name:
The policy name.
Execution Frequency
Select one or more days (Monday to Sunday) to create automatic snapshots.
Start Time
-
The time of day (UTC+8, by the hour) to create automatic snapshots.
-
The snapshot is created within one hour after the specified Start Time.
-
To create multiple snapshots per day, select multiple time slots from 00:00 to 23:00.
ImportantSnapshot creation can temporarily reduce I/O performance by up to 10%. Schedule snapshots during off-peak hours.
Retention Period
The retention period for automatic snapshots.
-
Keep For: Snapshots are deleted after the specified period.
-
Until Deleted: Created snapshots are retained based on the number of snapshots. After the maximum number is reached, the oldest snapshot is automatically deleted when a new snapshot is created.: When the snapshot quota is reached, the oldest snapshot is deleted to make room.
Note-
With a custom retention period, the Retention Period column shows Released After xx Days when 3 days remain. You can extend the retention period before expiration.
-
See Limits for the automatic snapshot quota.
-
You can modify the retention period after creating a policy. Changes apply only to new snapshots. For example, if existing snapshots have a 20-day retention and you change the policy to 10 days, existing snapshots are still retained for 20 days.
-
If Delete Automatic Snapshots While Releasing Disk is enabled, snapshots are deleted when the disk is released, regardless of the retention period. A disk is released when you manually release it, its instance is released, or you replace its system disk.
-
You can delete snapshots at any time to avoid ongoing storage costs, regardless of the retention period.
Cross-region replication
Important-
Replicating a snapshot incurs cross-region data transfer fees. The snapshot copy also incurs storage fees based on its size and retention period. See Snapshot billing.
-
See Copy snapshot.
Parameter
Description
Cross-Region Replication for Snapshots
Automatically replicates snapshots to the destination region for backup and disaster recovery.
Destination Region
The target region for snapshot replication.
Retention Time of Snapshot Copies
The retention period for snapshot copies in the destination region.
Copy and Encrypt
-
Disabled: Encrypted source snapshots are re-encrypted with a service-managed KMS key in the destination region. Unencrypted snapshots remain unencrypted.
-
Enabled: All snapshots are replicated and encrypted in the destination region using a key you specify.
See Disk encryption.
