Share deployment sets

To enable collaboration across multiple Alibaba Cloud accounts, you can share a deployment set from one account with others. This allows you to centrally manage the physical placement of ECS instances to meet high-availability requirements, ensuring that instances created by different accounts adhere to the same deployment policy.

The Resource Sharing service enables deployment set sharing.

  • The sharer creates a Resource Share in the Resource Sharing console, adds the target deployment set to the resource share, and then adds the specified Alibaba Cloud accounts.

  • After the principal accepts the invitation, they can create ECS instances in the shared deployment set.

Usage notes

  • A sharer cannot cancel a share if a principal has ECS instances in the deployment set.

  • The sharer configures core properties of the deployment set, such as the deployment policy and region. All members of the share use the same configuration and cannot modify it independently. This ensures resource consistency and control.

Billing

  • The deployment set sharing feature and sharing actions performed through the Resource Sharing service are free of charge.

  • Instances in a deployment set follow a "creator pays" model. When a principal uses a shared deployment set to create an ECS instance, Alibaba Cloud charges all related fees to the principal's account, not the sharer's account.

Permissions for sharers and principals

After a deployment set is shared, the sharer and principals have different permissions, as shown in the following table.

Instructions for sharers (deployment set owner)

Prerequisites

Before you start, make sure you have completed the following:

  • You have successfully created a deployment set in the target region.

  • You have obtained the Alibaba Cloud account ID of the principal.

Share a deployment set

You must share the deployment set in the Resource Sharing console.

  1. Log on to the Resource Sharing console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Resource Sharing > Resources I Share.

  3. In the top navigation bar, select the region of the shared resource.

  4. Click Create Resource Share. On the Create Resource Share page, configure the following key parameters:

    1. Select the deployment set to share.

In the Resource Share Name field, enter a name, for example, ShareDeploymentSet-Example. Select a region, such as China (Hangzhou), and select ECS Deployment Set as the resource type. Select the target deployment set and then click Next.

    2. Specify the principal. In the Principal ID field, enter the principal's Alibaba Cloud account ID and click Add.

For Scope of principals, select Allow sharing with any account. For Principal type, select Alibaba Cloud account. After the principals are added, click Next.

  5. After confirming that all configurations are correct, click OK.

After the resource share is created, its details page opens. You can switch to the Principal tab to see that the status of the newly added account is Associating.

Cancel sharing

A sharer can cancel a share only after the principal releases all instances from the deployment set.

  1. Go to the ECS console - Deployment Sets page, and select the region and resource group where the target deployment set is located.

  2. Find the deployment set for which you want to cancel sharing, and click the deployment set ID.

  3. On the deployment set details page, go to the Share Management tab. Find the target resource share and click Cancel Sharing in the Actions column.

After the principal is removed, they can no longer view the deployment set.

Instructions for principals (deployment set users)

Prerequisites

You have received a resource sharing invitation from the sharer.

Accept a sharing invitation

  1. Log on to the Resource Sharing console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Resource Sharing > Resources Shared To Me.

  3. In the top navigation bar, select the region of the shared resource.

  4. Find the target resource share and click Accept in the Actions column.

After accepting the invitation, the status of the resource share changes from Pending Confirmation to Enabled. You can find the shared deployment set in the ECS console - Deployment Sets.

Create instances in a shared deployment set

After accepting the invitation, you can create instances in the shared deployment set.

  1. In the ECS console - Deployment Sets, select the region and resource group of the target deployment set.

  2. Click Create Instance in the Actions column for the target deployment set to create an instance in that deployment set.

FAQ

  • After a deployment set is shared, can the sharer view or manage the ECS instances created by the principal?

No. You can view only the instances under your own account.

  • What happens to a principal's instances if the sharer cancels the share or deletes the deployment set?

The sharer cannot cancel the share if the principal has instances in the deployment set.

  • Can I share a deployment set with multiple Alibaba Cloud accounts at the same time?

Yes. You can add multiple Alibaba Cloud account IDs when you create a resource share, or add more principals to an existing resource share. If you have enabled Resource Directory, you can also share the deployment set with a Resource Directory organization.

  • Can a principal re-share a deployment set that they have received?

No. Only the original resource owner (the sharer) can share the resource.

  • Does sharing a deployment set increase the instance quota?

No. After a deployment set is shared, the sharer and all principals share the instance quota of the deployment set.
