Create LoRa devices

Updated at:

You can use IoT Platform to create LoRa products and devices. This topic describes how to create a single LoRa device and how to create LoRa devices in batches.

Prerequisites

  • You have created a product that uses LoRaWAN for communication. For more information, see Create a product.
Note Currently, you can create products that use LoRaWAN for communication only in legacy public instances and Enterprise instances where Link WAN is enabled. For more information about instances, see Instance overview.
  • You have obtained the device certificate information. The certificate information is available in two combinations:
    • DevEui and PIN Code: This certificate information is issued by Alibaba Cloud and is typically printed on the device label.

For legacy public instances and Enterprise instances where Link WAN is enabled, you can use this certificate information to create a single device or create devices in batches.

    • DevEui, JoinEui, and AppKey: If a device does not have a certificate issued by Alibaba Cloud, you can define the certificate information. The DevEui and JoinEui must be 16-digit hexadecimal (HEX) values. The JoinEui cannot start with d896e0. The AppKey must be a 32-digit HEX value.

For Enterprise instances where Link WAN is enabled, you can use this certificate information to create a single device or create devices in batches.

In both combinations, the DevEui is the unique identifier for a LoRa device and complies with the LoRaWAN protocol standard. Make sure that the DevEui is unique within the product and has been programmed into the device.

Create a single device

  1. Log on to the IoT Platform console.
  2. On the Overview page, find the instance that you want to manage and click the instance ID or instance name.

  3. In the navigation pane on the left, choose Device Management > Device. Then, click Add Device.
  4. In the dialog box that appears, select the product that uses LoRaWAN for communication.
The new device inherits the features and attributes defined for the product.
  5. Enter the device certificate information.
    • For a legacy public instance, enter the DevEui and PIN Code.
    • For an Enterprise instance where Link WAN is enabled, you can select one of the following options:
      • Issued by Alibaba Cloud: Enter the DevEui and PIN Code.
      • Custom: Enter the DevEui, JoinEui, and AppKey.
  6. Click Confirm to create the device.
After the device is created, the View Device Certificate dialog box appears. You can view and copy the certificate information of the LoRa device.

Create devices in batches

  1. In the navigation pane on the left, choose Device Management > Device. Then, click Add Devices in Batches.
  2. In the dialog box that appears, select the product that uses LoRaWAN for communication.
The new device inherits the features and attributes defined for the product.
  3. Download the table template and enter the certificate information for the devices.
    Important
    • Do not modify the first row of the template. Start entering information from cell A2.
    • You can create a maximum of 500 devices at a time. A single file can contain up to 500 device records.
    • For a legacy public instance, click Download .csv Template. In the downloaded template, enter the DevEui and PIN Code in the DevEui and PinCode columns. Then, upload the completed file.
    • For an Enterprise instance where Link WAN is enabled, select Issued by Alibaba Cloud or Custom. Download the corresponding template, enter the certificate information, and then upload the completed file.
      • Issued by Alibaba Cloud: Enter the DevEui and PIN Code.
      • Custom: Enter the DevEui, JoinEui, and AppKey.
Important After you upload the file, wait for the file to be parsed. If a parsing error occurs, modify the file based on the error message and upload it again.
  4. Click Confirm to create the devices in batches.

What to do next

To build the required network services for the Internet of Things (IoT) and develop device-side components, such as gateways and nodes, see the Alibaba Cloud Link WAN documentation.
Note After you create LoRa devices on IoT Platform, you do not need to enter device information or configure data forwarding in Alibaba Cloud Link WAN.

For an example of how to connect a LoRa device to IoT Platform, see Smart museum scenario.
