Learn how to activate MaxCompute and optionally set up DataWorks for integrated data development.
Activate MaxCompute
Before you begin

You have created an Alibaba Cloud account.
If this is your first time using an Alibaba Cloud big data product, we recommend that you use an Alibaba Cloud account to activate MaxCompute. Prepare an Alibaba Cloud account.

You have created a RAM user.
To activate MaxCompute as a RAM user, grant the RAM user the AliyunBSSOrderAccess and AliyunMaxComputeFullAccess permissions. Prepare a RAM user.
Free trial (optional)
Alibaba Cloud accounts that have never activated MaxCompute can apply for a free resource package in select regions. Free trial for new users.
Procedure
Method 1: From the product page

On the Alibaba Cloud MaxCompute product homepage, click Buy Now.

On the product purchase page, select Product Type, Region, and Specifications Type, and then click Buy Now.
Method 2: From the console

Log in to the MaxCompute console and select a region in the upper-left corner.
On the Overview page, in the Quick Start section, click Activate Now. Alternatively, if the service is already enabled in the current region, click Activate in the Activate Service step.

On the product purchase page, select Product Type, Region, and Specifications Type, and click Buy Now.
Parameters

Product Type: Select a billing method. Billing items and billing methods.

Specifications Type: Select a resource tier. Specifications Overview.

Compute Unit: A compute resource unit. 1 CU = 1 CPU + 4 GB memory.

First-time activation requires creating a service-linked role (SLR) for MaxCompute.
If MaxCompute is already activated without this SLR, authorize it here.
SLR details:

Role name: AliyunServiceRoleForMaxComputeIdentityMgmt
Purpose: Authorizes MaxCompute to access other Alibaba Cloud big data services, such as Hologres.

Role policy: AliyunServiceRolePolicyForMaxComputeIdentityMgmt

First-time activation enables the Standard Edition with pay-as-you-go billing. You pay only for resources consumed. Billing details:compute fees (pay-as-you-go), storage fees, and data transfer fees (public network download).
Activate MaxCompute and DataWorks together
DataWorks is Alibaba Cloud's big data development and governance platform, tightly integrated with MaxCompute. Use them together to develop jobs, schedule tasks, perform O&M, and manage data governance from a single platform.
Procedure

For RAM users, grant the AliyunDataWorksFullAccess permission. Prepare a RAM user.
Log in to the MaxCompute console and select a region in the upper-left corner.

On the Overview page, in the Quick Start section, click Activate with DataWorks. Alternatively, if the service is already enabled in the current region, click Activate with DataWorks in the Activate Service step.
The free Basic Edition of DataWorks is activated by default with pay-as-you-go billing. Feature details by DataWorks edition.
