Learn why overdue payments occur for ApsaraVideo Media Processing (MPS), how overdue payments are handled, and how to view the overdue amount.
Causes of overdue payments
MPS generates an overdue payment in the following situations:
|
Scenario |
Cause of overdue payment |
|
You have not purchased an MPS resource plan |
If your available credit (including your Alibaba Cloud account balance, vouchers, and coupons) is insufficient to cover the outstanding bill, your account immediately enters an overdue state. |
|
You have purchased an MPS resource plan |
If your usage exceeds the resource plan's quota, or if you incur charges not covered by the resource plan, and your available credit (including your Alibaba Cloud account balance, vouchers, and coupons) is insufficient to cover the outstanding bill, your account immediately enters an overdue state. |
Billing cycle
MPS uses hourly billing. Bills are generated for each hour of usage, and fees are deducted after the bills are generated.

Example
A user submits a batch of transcoding jobs that are completed between 11:00:00 and 12:00:00 on November 10, 2023.
After 12:00:00 on November 10, 2023, MPS calculates the usage for the jobs that were completed between 11:00:00 and 12:00:00.
At 14:00:00 on November 10, 2023, MPS generates a bill for the usage between 11:00:00 and 12:00:00. The fees are deducted immediately after the bill is generated.
Service suspension due to overdue payments
If your account has an overdue payment, your service is at risk of suspension. You will receive notifications about the overdue payment. Settle the payment promptly to avoid service disruptions.
ApsaraVideo Media Processing (MPS)
-
If your overdue amount is within your service suspension protection quota, your service will not be suspended.
NoteAlibaba Cloud provides service suspension protection, which lets you continue using pay-as-you-go services for a specific period or up to a certain amount after a payment becomes overdue. Billing continues as usual during this period. The protection quota is not an upper limit on the total overdue amount. Your quota or protection period is automatically calculated and updated each month based on your historical spending on Alibaba Cloud. For more information, see Delayed suspension for overdue payments.
-
If your overdue amount exceeds your service suspension protection quota, your MPS service is automatically suspended. The effects include:
-
You cannot submit new jobs from the console or by calling API operations. This includes, but is not limited to, submitting transcoding jobs, snapshot jobs, media information analysis jobs, intelligent production jobs, DataQ - Smart Tag Service jobs, content moderation jobs, image and text moderation jobs, video quality moderation jobs, or media fingerprinting jobs. You also cannot import jobs to a text library or create media fingerprint libraries.
-
Submitted jobs that are waiting in an MPS queue are paused.
-
Jobs that are already in progress continue to run until they are complete. You are charged for successfully completed jobs, and the overdue amount continues to accumulate.
-
-
If you settle the overdue amount within 15 days (360 hours) of the service suspension, your MPS service automatically resumes.
-
Paused jobs automatically resume. Because billing is based on job completion time, jobs that were submitted before the overdue payment occurred will appear on a bill generated after you settle the payment.
-
-
If you do not settle the overdue amount within 15 days (360 hours) of the service suspension, Alibaba Cloud considers you to have voluntarily abandoned MPS. Your service is terminated, and all data stored in MPS is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
Other cloud products
MPS may depend on the following Alibaba Cloud services. Their overdue payment policies are listed below:
|
Product |
Description |
Overdue payment information |
|
Object Storage Service (OSS) |
MPS stores input and output files in OSS. If your overdue amount exceeds your service suspension protection quota, OSS is automatically suspended. Your data is retained for 15 days. After 15 days, the bucket is released. |
|
|
Simple Message Queue (formerly MNS) |
MNS receives task results from MPS. If an overdue payment is not settled within 24 hours, you can no longer access the MNS API. Unprocessed messages expire and are released based on the queue's time-to-live (TTL) setting. Released data cannot be recovered. |
|
|
Key Management Service (KMS) |
KMS generates and manages keys for standard and private encryption jobs in MPS. KMS is a subscription service, so you pay upfront and will not incur overdue payments during use. When a KMS instance expires, it is immediately suspended, and you cannot access the service. The instance is released 16 days after expiration (15 days after suspension). |
|
|
Cloud Monitor |
Cloud Monitor sets alarms for metrics such as request success rate and transcoding usage. |
See the official Cloud Monitor website |
|
ApsaraVideo VOD |
ApsaraVideo VOD accelerates content delivery for files transcoded by MPS. If you have configured an accelerated domain name in ApsaraVideo VOD, the domain name is taken offline. |
|
|
Content Delivery Network (CDN) |
Alibaba Cloud CDN accelerates content delivery for files transcoded by MPS. If your overdue amount exceeds your service suspension protection quota, CDN stops immediately. The accelerated domain name is taken offline, and its CNAME record is resolved to an invalid address, `offline.***.com`. The accelerated domain name becomes inaccessible. |
