Important

This issue affects only users who activated Key Management Service (KMS) on or after March 31, 2022. If you activated KMS before that date, this article does not apply to you.

Problem description

You cannot use KMS-managed bring-your-own-key (BYOK) keys to encrypt data in OSS.

Causes

KMS was upgraded to Dedicated KMS on March 31, 2022. Users who activated KMS on or after that date can no longer use KMS-managed BYOK keys to encrypt data in the cloud. Dedicated KMS is now required to use BYOK encryption.

Examples

The error occurs when you use KMS-managed BYOK keys for server-side encryption (SSE-KMS).

Solutions

Purchase a Dedicated KMS instance to restore BYOK encryption support.

See Purchase a dedicated KMS instance.
