Image processing methods

Updated at:

You can process images in OSS using file URLs, APIs, and SDKs. This topic describes how to use these three methods to process images.

Process images using file URLs

You can process images using file URLs in two ways: by adding image processing parameters or by adding image style parameters.

  • For public-read or public-read-write files, you can process images by adding image processing parameters or image style parameters directly to the file URL.

  • For private image files, you cannot process images by adding parameters directly to the file URL. You must use an SDK to add image processing operations to a signed URL.

Important

By default, an image is downloaded when you access it using a file URL. To preview the image in a browser, bind a custom domain name and add a CNAME record. For more information, see Bind a custom domain name.

Public-read or public-read-write image files

The following table describes how to process images by adding image processing parameters or image style parameters to a file URL.

Image processing method

Add image processing parameters

Add image style parameters

Image processing URL

https://bucketname.endpoint/objectname?x-oss-process=image/action,parame_value

https://bucketname.endpoint/objectname?x-oss-process=style/stylename

Parameter descriptions

  • https://bucketname.endpoint/objectname: The endpoint of the object. For more information about how to obtain the endpoint of an object, see How do I obtain the URL of an object after I upload it?.

  • x-oss-process=image/: A fixed parameter that indicates that the image file is processed using image processing parameters.

  • action,parame_value: The action, parameter (parame), and value of an image processing operation. These items define how the image is processed. Separate multiple operations with forward slashes (/). OSS processes the image in the order of the image processing parameters. For example, image/resize,w_200/rotate,90 indicates that the image is first resized to a width of 200 px and then rotated by 90 degrees. For more information about the supported image processing parameters, see Image processing.

  • https://bucketname.endpoint/objectname: The endpoint of the object. For more information about how to obtain the endpoint of an object, see How do I obtain the URL of an object after I upload it?.

  • x-oss-process=style/: A fixed parameter that indicates that the image file is processed using image style parameters.

  • stylename: The name of the style that you created in the OSS console. For more information about how to configure a style, see Create a style.

If you set a custom separator, you can use the separator to replace ?x-oss-process=style/ to simplify the image processing URL. For example, if you set the separator to an exclamation point (!), the image processing URL is: <https://bucketname.endpoint/objectname!stylename. For more information about how to configure a custom separator, see Set custom separators.

Private image files

The following code provides examples of how to use common SDKs to generate signed URLs that contain image processing parameters. For information about how to use other SDKs to generate signed URLs that contain image processing parameters, see SDK overview.

Process images using SDKs

You can use SDKs to process images by adding image processing parameters or image style parameters.

Add image processing parameters

When you process an image by adding image processing parameters, you must separate multiple parameters with forward slashes (/). The following code provides examples of how to add image processing parameters using common SDKs. For information about how to add image processing parameters using other SDKs, see Overview.

Add image styles

You can use an image style to encapsulate multiple image processing parameters. Then, you can use the style to process images in batches. The following code provides examples of how to use image styles to process images using common SDKs. For information about how to use image styles to process images using other SDKs, see Overview.

Use the REST API

If your program has high customization requirements, you can directly make REST API requests. To do this, you must manually write code to calculate signatures.

You can process images by adding image processing parameters or image style parameters to the GetObject operation. For more information, see GetObject.

  • Add image processing parameters

The following is a sample request:

    GET /oss.jpg?x-oss-process=image/resize,w_100 HTTP/1.1
    Host: oss-example.oss-cn-hangzhou.aliyuncs.com
    Date: Fri, 28 Oct 2022 06:40:10 GMT
    Authorization: AuthorizationValue
  • Adding image style parameters

    Sample request:

    GET /oss.jpg?x-oss-process=style/styleexample HTTP/1.1
    Host: oss-example.oss-cn-hangzhou.aliyuncs.com
    Date: Fri, 28 Oct 2022 06:40:10 GMT
    Authorization: AuthorizationValue

References

By default, the image processing service does not save processed images. You can add parameters to an image processing request to save the processed image as an object in a specified bucket. For more information, see Save processed images.
