PolarDB provides storage plans to offset charges for storage space, level-1 backups/data backups, level-2 backups, log backups, and cold data archiving when the Billing Method For Storage is pay-as-you-go. Storage plan pricing varies based on subscription duration and specifications; larger capacities and longer subscription durations offer greater cost savings.

Notes

  • A storage plan's purchase, upgrade, renewal, and unsubscription involve only billing and do not affect normal business operations.

  • Storage plans are divided into two types: Mainland China and Hong Kong (China) And Regions Outside The Chinese Mainland, which are shared across all PolarDB clusters in the regions specified for each type.

  • If the remaining capacity of the storage plan is insufficient, the overage is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis.

  • If your storage plan capacity is insufficient, you can purchase additional storage plans or upgrade your existing storage plan.

  • Each Alibaba Cloud account can purchase a maximum of four storage plans.

  • After purchasing a storage plan, the usage of offsettable resources is no longer billed hourly. Instead, it is converted into a storage usage amount in GB based on the offset rules for each resource and deducted from the storage plan.

  • Usage that exceeds the storage plan capacity is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis.

For example, you have three PolarDB clusters, each with a storage capacity of 400 GB. These three clusters can share a 1000 GB storage plan, and the excess 200 GB is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Offset rules

A storage plan provides a fixed hourly quota to offset the storage usage of storage space, level-1 backups/data backups, level-2 backups, and log backups, and cold data archiving, for which the Storage Billing Method is pay-as-you-go.

For example, if you purchase a 50 GB storage plan, you receive a fixed quota of 50 GB per hour to offset relevant storage usage during the plan's validity period.

Note
  • Storage plans are available in two types: Chinese Mainland and China (Hong Kong) And Regions Outside The Chinese Mainland. A single storage plan can offset the storage usage of storage space (including ESSD PL0, ESSD PL1, ESSD PL2, ESSD PL3, ESSD AutoPL, PSL4, and PSL5), backup storage (including level-1 backups (data backups), level-2 backups, and log backups), and cold data archiving for all PolarDB clusters in the regions covered by the plan type.

  • Storage plans do not currently cover cross-region backups within level-2 backups.

The following list describes how the 50 GB storage plan is used for offset:

  • Cluster A and Cluster E: Deductions from the storage plan are not supported because their Storage Billing Method is subscription.

  • For Cluster B, the total deduction is 1.385 GB (2.77 GB of database storage usage × 0.5 deduction factor), leaving the storage plan with a Remaining Amount After Deduction of 48.615 GB (50 GB - 1.385 GB).

  • For Cluster C, the deduction is 2.81 GB (database storage usage) × 0.5 (deduction factor), for a total of 1.405 GB, leaving a Remaining Amount After Deduction of 47.21 GB (48.615 GB - 1.405 GB) in the storage plan.

  • The deduction for Cluster D is 45.07 GB (database storage usage) × 1 (deduction factor), for a total deduction of 45.07 GB. The Remaining Amount After Deduction of the storage plan is 2.14 GB (47.21 GB - 45.07 GB).

To sum up, a total of 47.86 GB is offset (calculated as 1.385 GB + 1.405 GB + 45.07 GB). The Remaining Amount After Offset for the storage plan is 2.14 GB (calculated as 50 GB - 47.86 GB).

The following list describes how the 50 GB storage plan is used for offset:

  • For Cluster A and Cluster E: Because the Storage Billing Method is subscription, storage plans are not applicable.

  • The deduction amount for Cluster B is 2.77 GB (database storage usage) × 0.5 (deduction factor), for a total deduction of 1.385 GB. The storage plan Remaining Amount After Deduction is 48.615 GB (50 GB - 1.385 GB).

  • The total deductible amount for Cluster C is 1.405 GB (2.81 GB of database storage usage × a 0.5 deduction factor). The Remaining Amount After Deduction of the storage plan is 47.21 GB (48.615 GB - 1.405 GB).

  • For Cluster D, the deductible amount is 45.07 GB (database storage usage) × 1 (deduction factor). The total amount deducted is 45.07 GB, leaving the storage plan with a Remaining Amount After Deduction of 2.14 GB (47.21 GB - 45.07 GB).

  • The deductible amount for Cluster F should be 3.92 GB (database storage usage) × 1 (deduction factor), but because the storage plan's Remaining Amount After Deduction is 2.14 GB, only 2.14 GB can be deducted. A total of 2.14 GB is deducted, and the storage plan's Remaining Amount After Deduction is 0 GB (2.14 GB - 2.14 GB). The remaining 1.78 GB (3.92 GB - 2.14 GB) is billed based on the pay-as-you-go billing method.

To sum up, a total of 50 GB (1.385 GB + 1.405 GB + 45.07 GB + 2.14 GB) is offset. The Remaining Amount of the storage plan is 0 GB (50 GB - 50 GB).

Note

This example only demonstrates how to offset the storage usage of a PolarDB cluster. Other types of storage usage, such as the storage usage of level-1 backups/data backups, level-2 backups, log backups, and cold data archiving, are not included in this example.

The following list describes how the 50 GB storage plan is used for offset:

  • Storage plans offset usage based on the offset order. For more information, see Offset Order.

    • Enterprise Edition level-1 backup usage (exceeds free quota)

      • The level-1 backup usage of Cluster A does not exceed the free quota.

      • The level-1 backup usage of Cluster C does not exceed the free quota.

    • Enterprise Edition level-2 backup usage

      • The deducted amount for the level-2 backup of Cluster A is 2.45 GB × 0.043 (the deduction factor), which is 0.10535 GB. The Remaining Amount After Deduction for the storage plan is 49.89465 GB (50 GB - 0.10535 GB).

      • The amount deducted for the level-2 backup of Cluster C is 0.10234 GB (2.38 GB × 0.043, the deduction factor), and the Remaining Amount After Deduction in the storage plan is 49.79231 GB (49.89465 GB - 0.10234 GB).

    • Enterprise Edition log backup usage (exceeds free quota)

      • The log backup usage of Cluster A does not exceed the free quota.

      • The deduction amount for Cluster C's log backup is 119 GB (219 GB − 100 GB free quota) × 0.043 (deduction factor), resulting in a total deduction of 5.117 GB. The storage plan Remaining Amount After Deduction is 44.67531 GB (49.79231 GB − 5.117 GB).

    • Standard Edition data backup usage (exceeds free quota)

      • The data backup usage of Cluster E does not exceed the free quota.

    • Standard Edition log backup usage (exceeds free quota)

      • The log backup usage of Cluster E does not exceed the free quota.

To sum up, a total of 5.32469 GB (0.10535 GB + 0.10234 GB + 5.117 GB) of the storage plan is used to offset the backup storage usage beyond the free quota of the clusters. The storage plan Remaining Amount After Offset is 44.67531 GB (50 GB - 5.32469 GB).

The following list describes how the 50 GB storage plan is used for offset:

  • Cluster A: Cold data archiving is enabled, but no cold data has been archived. The current data volume is 0 MB, so no offset is needed.

  • Cluster B: Cold data archiving is disabled, so no offset is needed.

  • The deduction amount for Cluster C is calculated as 110 GB (cold data archiving data volume) × 0.045 (deduction factor), resulting in a total deduction of 4.95 GB. The storage plan Remaining Amount After Deduction is 45.05 GB (50 GB - 4.95 GB).

  • Cluster E: Cold data archiving is not supported, so no offset is needed.

To sum up, a total of 4.95 GB is offset. The Remaining Balance of the storage plan is 45.05 GB (50 GB - 4.95 GB).

Note

This example describes only how to offset the storage usage of cold data archiving for a PolarDB cluster. Other types of storage usage, such as cluster storage, level-1 backups/data backups, level-2 backups, or log backups, are not included in this example.

Offset order

Storage plans have an offset priority for different resources. The offset order is as follows:

  • Edition: Enterprise Edition > Standard Edition.

  • Enterprise Edition: Cluster storage usage (PSL5 and PSL4) > Level-1 backup usage (exceeding the free quota) > Cold data archiving usage > Level-2 backup usage > Log backup usage (exceeding the free quota). If multiple clusters have the same deduction priority, they are ordered based on their creation time. The storage usage of clusters that are created earlier is offset first.

  • Standard Edition: cluster storage usage > data backup usage (beyond the free quota) > log backup usage (beyond the free quota). If multiple clusters have the same deduction priority, the clusters are ordered based on the cluster creation time. The cluster that is created earlier is deducted first.

Best practices

  • How to estimate the required storage plan specifications

    • If you have not purchased PolarDB cluster, you need to estimate the storage plan specification based on a fixed capacity.

      云原生数据库PolarDB推出了资源包计算器。您可以根据您的业务情况和使用时长预估所需的存储容量,获取所需的存储包的规格建议。

    • If you have already purchased a PolarDB cluster, you need to estimate its required storage plan capacity.

      • System estimation

In the Storage Plan Capacity Estimator section to the right of PolarDB console > All Cluster Storage Data, you can directly estimate the required storage plan capacity for all PolarDB clusters under your Alibaba Cloud account.image

        Note
        • The Total Required Storage Plan Capacity in the Storage Plan Capacity Estimation dialog box does not include storage plans that you have purchased. For example, if you purchased a 100-GB storage plan applicable to the regions in the Chinese mainland, the 333.53 GB calculated in the preceding figure does not take into account the 100-GB storage plan that you have purchased. Therefore, you need to only purchase an additional storage plan of 233.53 GB.

        • Storage Plan Capacity Estimation currently does not support calculating deductions for backup storage of the cluster recycle bin, cold data archiving, or Standard Edition data backups.

      • Manual estimation

        1. View the different types of storage usage of all clusters. For more information, see View database storage usage, View total backup storage size, and View cold data archiving information.

        2. Estimate the required storage plan capacity based on the offset rules for each resource. For more information, see Storage space offset rules, Backup storage offset rules (level-1/data backups, level-2 backups, and log backups), and Cold data archiving offset rules.

  • How to choose a combination of storage plans

    There are two methods:

    • The larger the storage plan specification, the greater the discount. We recommend choosing a storage plan specification that is slightly larger than your storage volume.

    • Storage plans can be stacked. You can stack plans to meet requirements for specifications that are not currently supported by a single storage plan. For example, if your storage volume is close to 1,600 GB, you can purchase one 1,000 GB, one 500 GB, and one 100 GB storage plan.

You can decide how to combine plans based on your actual storage volume and the prices of the storage plans. For example:

If your business storage volume is close to 99,000 GB, you have several storage plan options (the following prices are for the Chinese mainland region):

    • Option 1: Purchase one 100,000 GB storage plan for CNY 192,000/month.

    • Option 2: Purchase one 90,000 GB and one 9,000 GB storage plan. The price is 173,000 + 20,400 = CNY 193,400/month.

    • Option 3: Purchase one 80,000 GB, one 10,000 GB, and one 9,000 GB storage plan. The price is 154,000 + 21,000 + 20,400 = CNY 195,400/month.

In this scenario, choosing Option 1 (a 100,000 GB storage plan) is more cost-effective.

FAQ

Purchase and usage

Is it mandatory to purchase a storage plan after purchasing a cluster?

No. Purchase a storage plan as needed. After purchase, the plan automatically offsets the usage of cluster storage, backup storage (exceeding the free quota), and cold data archiving (optional) in the corresponding region.

Storage plans are available in 1 TB, 3 TB, and 5 TB specifications. If my business requires 4 TB, how should I make a purchase?

You can first purchase a 1 TB and a 3 TB storage plan. When your storage volume approaches 5 TB, you can purchase a new storage plan or upgrade the original storage plan as needed.

Does a storage plan take effect immediately after purchase without affecting normal database operations?

You can choose to have the storage plan take effect immediately after the order is placed. It does not affect normal database operations.

Can PSL5 and PSL4 storage be offset by a storage plan? What are the specific offset ratios?

PSL5 and PSL4 storage can be offset by a storage plan. For specific offset ratios, see Storage space offset rules.

Can a storage plan be used to offset cluster storage space across different accounts?

No.

How can I estimate the price and resource plan specifications before purchasing?

You can use the pricing calculator and the resource plan calculator to make estimations.

Supported clusters

Can a storage plan be shared by multiple clusters?

Yes. A storage plan is shared by all clusters in the regions specified by its Resource Plan Type (Universal for the Chinese mainland or Universal for Hong Kong (China) and regions outside China). For more information, see Purchase a storage plan.

Can a storage plan be shared by clusters with different engines?

Yes, storage plans can be used for PolarDB for MySQL, PolarDB for PostgreSQL, and PolarDB for PostgreSQL (Compatible with Oracle) clusters.

Eligible resources

What types of storage usage can a storage plan offset?

A storage plan can offset the following types of storage usage:

  • Storage space usage, including the following:

    • PolarDB Enterprise Edition pay-as-you-go storage usage.

    • Storage usage of pay-as-you-go PolarDB Standard Edition.

  • Storage capacity occupied by backup files, including the following:

    • PolarDB Enterprise Edition usage for Level-1 Backups Beyond the Free Quota.

    • PolarDB Enterprise Edition Level-2 Backup usage.

    • Usage of PolarDB Standard Edition data backups beyond the free quota.

    • PolarDB Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition log backups (beyond the free quota) usage.

  • The OSS storage capacity that is generated by cold data archiving for PolarDB Enterprise Edition.

Is there a priority for offsetting with a storage plan? Can cluster storage costs be offset first?

How can I view the remaining usage of my storage plan?

You can view the remaining capacity of your purchased storage plan in the following ways:

Go to the Expenses and Costs page. In the navigation pane on the left, choose Account and then Resource Plans. On the Resource Plans page, select Resource Plan and then click Usage Details. You can then query the detailed offset information for your purchased resources.

Renewal and upgrade

What should I do if my storage plan capacity is insufficient? Can I buy another storage plan of the same type?

When your storage plan capacity is insufficient, the excess usage is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis. Storage plans support stacking. You can purchase multiple storage plans to use them together, or you can upgrade your storage plan.

How is the portion of data that exceeds the purchased storage plan capacity billed? Does it affect my business?

The portion that exceeds your storage plan capacity is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis. For more information, see Storage Plan Overview. This does not impact your business.

How do I renew my storage plan before it expiresrenew?
