What are storage plans and compute plans with defined specifications

PolarDB offers two types of resource plans: compute plans with defined specifications and storage plans. These plans help reduce compute node and storage fees and increase cluster flexibility.

Storage plans

The storage capacity of a PolarDB cluster is automatically scaled based on the amount of stored data. You do not need to specify the storage capacity. You are charged for the storage capacity that you use. The storage fee for each PolarDB cluster is charged based on the data volume and retention period. If you require a larger storage capacity, such as 1,000 GB or more, we recommend that you purchase storage plans to reduce costs.

A storage plan is a subscription resource plan from PolarDB that can offset fees for storage space and level-1 backups that exceed the free quota. Storage plans can effectively reduce the fees for storage space and level-1 backups. The larger the capacity and the longer the subscription duration of the storage plan, the more cost-effective it is.

For example, a monthly storage plan offers a discount of 10% to 45% off the pay-as-you-go price for the same capacity. The more months you purchase, the greater the discount, up to 45% off. In addition, if you purchase a storage plan on a yearly basis, you receive an additional 15% discount on the monthly price.

  • Purchase

For more information about storage plan discounts and how to purchase a storage plan, see Purchase a storage plan.

    Note
    • Storage plans are available in two types: General-purpose (Chinese Mainland) and General-purpose (Hong Kong (China) and International). Each type can be shared by all PolarDB clusters in the regions specified for that type.

    • If your storage plan has insufficient capacity, you can purchase and stack new storage plans, or upgrade the storage plan. Downgrading a purchased storage plan is not supported.

    • Usage that exceeds the storage plan capacity is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis.

For example, if you have three PolarDB clusters, each with 400 GB of storage capacity, these three clusters can share one 1000 GB storage plan. The excess 200 GB is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis. For more information, see View database storage usage.

    • Storage plans cannot be used to offset the costs of cross-region backups.

  • Usage combinations

PolarDB provides three purchasing options for compute node usage: pay-as-you-go + compute plan with defined specifications (recommended), pay-as-you-go, and subscription. Each option has a different pricing plan. All three options can be used with storage plans.

Compute plans with defined specifications

Purchase a compute plan with defined specifications to offset the compute node fees of a pay-as-you-go cluster. If you purchase this type of plan, the fees for pay-as-you-go compute nodes are automatically deducted from the plan, which is more cost-effective.

  • Purchase

For more information, see Purchase a compute plan with defined specifications.

    Note
    • You can purchase and stack multiple compute plans with defined specifications. One compute plan can be shared by multiple clusters.

    • Each compute plan with defined specifications is valid for 1, 3, or 5 years. Any remaining capacity in the plan automatically expires after the validity period ends.

    • If the remaining compute capacity in the plan is insufficient to offset the fees, the excess compute node fees are billed on a pay-as-you-go basis.

    • Compute plans with defined specifications do not support renewal, upgrade, or downgrade. If a plan has insufficient capacity, is about to expire, or has expired, you can purchase another plan to stack.

    • The capacity of a compute plan with defined specifications is consumed only when you have a pay-as-you-go PolarDB for PostgreSQL cluster under your account.

Fees for compute nodes in pay-as-you-go clusters.

Note

For more information about compute node pricing, see Billing rules for compute plans with defined specifications.

  • Offsets storage space fees at a 1:1 ratio. This means 1 GB of storage plan capacity can offset 1 GB of storage space usage.

  • Offsets level-1 backup fees (when the free quota is exceeded) at a 1:1.6 ratio. This means 1 GB of storage plan capacity can offset 1.6 GB of level-1 backup storage usage.

Note

For more information about storage space and level-1 backup pricing, see Overview and Billing rules for backup storage that exceeds the free quota.

Applicable cluster types

Pay-as-you-go clusters only.

Note

Subscription clusters do not require a compute plan with defined specifications because the compute node fees are prepaid.

Can be used by both pay-as-you-go and subscription clusters.

Region restrictions

None. Can be used to offset compute node fees for pay-as-you-go clusters in any region under your account.

Storage plans are available in two types: General-purpose (Chinese Mainland) and General-purpose (Hong Kong (China) and International).

  • General-purpose (Chinese Mainland): Can be used for all PolarDB clusters in regions in the Chinese mainland, such as Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing.

  • General-purpose (Hong Kong (China) and International): Can be used for all PolarDB clusters in regions in Hong Kong (China) and outside China, such as the UK and Singapore.

Purchase quantity

Unlimited. You can make multiple purchases and stack the plans.

An account can have a maximum of one General-purpose (Chinese Mainland) and one General-purpose (Hong Kong (China) and International) storage plan at the same time.

Renewal

Upgrades and downgrades
