Change from subscription to pay-as-you-go
You can switch the billing method of an ApsaraDB RDS instance from subscription to pay-as-you-go to align with your business requirements.
Prerequisites
The instance uses the subscription billing method. For more information, see Billable items.
The instance is running.
NoteIf your subscription instance is locked due to expiration, you must first renew the instance. For more information, see Manual renewal.
The instance type is not a phased-out instance type. If it is, change the instance type before you switch to pay-as-you-go.
Your Alibaba Cloud account balance must be at least CNY 100.
You cannot change the billing method for ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server 2008 R2 instances that use high-performance local disks. You must upgrade the instance to SQL Server 2012 or 2016 before you change the billing method.
Refunds
When you switch a subscription instance to pay-as-you-go, you receive a refund for the unused subscription fee to your original payment method.

Impact
This operation does not affect your running instance.
Consider this change carefully. For long-term use, the subscription billing method is more cost-effective than the pay-as-you-go method. Longer subscription periods also provide greater discounts.
Procedure
Log in to the ApsaraDB RDS console. In the navigation pane on the left, click Instances. In the top navigation bar, select a region.
Find the target instance. Use either of the following methods to open the Switch to Pay-as-you-go Billing page:
In the Billing Method column, click Change to Pay-As-You-Go.
Click the instance ID. In the Status section, click Change to Pay-As-You-Go next to Billing Method.
Confirm the instance information, read and agree to the terms of service, then click Pay Now to complete the payment.

FAQ
Q: I receive a price inquiry failure error when I switch a subscription instance to pay-as-you-go. What do I do?
A: This error occurs for the following reasons:
The instance is in a classic network. The classic network service for ApsaraDB RDS has been discontinued. You must change the network type to a VPC before changing the billing method.
The instance uses a phased-out instance type. If a message about a phased-out instance type appears, you must change the instance type. For more information, see Phased-out instance types.
