GeoServer is a J2EE implementation of the OpenGIS Web Server specification that allows you to publish map data, update, delete, and insert feature data, and share geospatial information.
GeoServer conforms to both the Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service (WFS) standards from the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). It supports data sources such as PostgreSQL, Shapefile, ArcSDE, Oracle, VPF, MySQL, and MapInfo, along with hundreds of projections. GeoServer can produce maps in various formats, such as JPEG, GIF, PNG, SVG, and KML, and runs in any J2EE or servlet-based container. It is integrated with OpenLayers, a mapping library that uses Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) requests to create maps in Map Builder.
