This topic describes the product editions of ApsaraDB RDS for PostgreSQL, including their scenarios, supported instance types, and features.

ApsaraDB RDS for PostgreSQL product editions

Series	Description	Scenarios
Basic Edition	Single-node, compute-storage decoupled architecture. Does not support read-only instances.	Personal learning. Microsites. Development and staging environments for small and medium-sized enterprises.
High-availability Edition	Primary/secondary high availability (HA) architecture that supports automatic failover. The secondary node is not accessible. Supports adding read-only instances to scale out read capabilities.	Production databases for large and medium-sized enterprises. Databases for industries such as the Internet, Internet of Things (IoT), retail e-commerce, logistics, and gaming.
Cluster Edition	One-primary-multiple-secondaries HA architecture that supports automatic failover. The secondary nodes are accessible to improve read capabilities. You can add more secondary nodes to further scale out read capabilities.	Production databases for large and medium-sized enterprises. Applications include New Retail, automotive manufacturing, and large-scale enterprise ERP systems.

Change series

Basic Edition instances that run PostgreSQL 10 or later can be upgraded to High-availability Edition.

Note

You cannot change the instance edition for other instances. To change the edition, you must create a new instance and migrate the data from the original instance to the new one. For more information, see Create an instance and Migrate data.
