End of patch updates for ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server 2008 R2-ApsaraDB RDS(RDS)-阿里云帮助中心

Effective July 9, 2019, Alibaba Cloud discontinued SQL Server patch updates for ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server 2008 R2 instances.

Background

On July 9, 2019, Microsoft ended support for SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2. After this date, Microsoft no longer provides free patches and security updates, offering only paid Extended Security Updates. These updates, available for up to three years starting from July 9, 2019, include updates for issues rated as critical.

Aligning with Microsoft's policy, Alibaba Cloud also discontinued SQL Server patch updates for ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server 2008 R2 instances on the same date.

Existing instances	The operation of existing instances is not immediately affected. Note Continuing to use ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server 2008 R2 may expose you to risks. For more information, see the Disclaimer section in this topic.	For instances that use Cloud Disk: Purchase an instance that runs a later major version and restore data to the new instance. For instances that use a high-performance local disk: Upgrade the major version of your instance to SQL Server 2012 or 2016. Note From November 1, 2022, to March 31, 2024, Alibaba Cloud is offering an upgrade subsidy for ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server 2008 R2 instances. If you upgrade your existing ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server 2008 R2 instance during this period, Alibaba Cloud will credit a CNY 200 coupon to your Alibaba Cloud account within one week of the upgrade completion.
New instances	ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server 2008 R2 instances are no longer available for purchase.	Purchase an available instance that runs a supported major version.
