SQL Server cloud migration assessment tool

The SQL Server Database Assessment Tool (DAT) is an automated tool that assesses your self-managed SQL Server database and generates a cloud migration assessment report. The report helps you analyze and prepare for your cloud migration. This tool is free to use. This topic describes how to use DAT.

Note

This tool runs only on Windows systems. The source database must be a self-managed SQL Server database that is running on-premises or on a virtual machine.

Procedure

  1. Download the cloud migration assessment tool and unzip the package.

  2. Start the assessment.

    1. Open the SQL Server cloud migration assessment tool.

    2. In the upper-left corner, click New Connection.

    3. In the dialog box, enter information such as the server address and authentication method for the SQL Server database that you want to migrate. Click Save.

      The connected database server appears on the left.

    4. Click the + icon to expand the database list, select the database to assess, and click Cloud Migration Assessment.

    5. After the assessment is complete, click Generate Report in the lower-right corner and save the report to a specified path.

  3. View the assessment report.

    View a sample assessment report. The report contains the following information:

    • Cloud migration recommendations: Provides recommendations for the instance family, specifications, and version of ApsaraDB RDS.

    • Check items: This section includes the following three parts:

      • Compatible with RDS for SQL Server

        These features are supported, but you must select a specific version of RDS for SQL Server.

      • You can ensure compatibility with RDS SQL Server by making some adjustments.

        These features can be used on ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server with minor adjustments.

      • Incompatible with RDS for SQL Server

        These features are not supported by RDS for SQL Server. You can use the alternative methods provided in the report.
