Compute package

A compute package is a prepaid resource package from RDS that offsets pay-as-you-go compute resources for instances. Usage covered by the package is not billed, and only usage that exceeds the package limit is charged hourly. This topic describes the billing rules for RDS compute packages and how to purchase them.

Use cases

For large workloads that fluctuate significantly, consider pairing the pay-as-you-go billing method with a Compute Plan. This approach is more cost-effective than using pay-as-you-go alone and offers more flexibility with usage duration and instance types than a subscription.

Here are some example scenarios:

  • Scenario 1: You need to evaluate multiple RDS instances with various types and specifications for only a few days.

    A subscription is not suitable for such short-term use. You can purchase a single Compute Plan to offset the costs of multiple pay-as-you-go instances and release them immediately once you are finished. This approach is convenient, flexible, and more cost-effective than using pay-as-you-go alone.

  • Scenario 2: You expect your workload to fluctuate significantly over the next six months, and the timing of peak loads is unpredictable. During periods of high load, you will need to adjust the instance configuration or add more instances.

    Given the high workload and long usage period, using pay-as-you-go alone is not cost-effective. By pairing pay-as-you-go instances with a Compute Plan, you get lower costs while retaining the convenience and flexibility of the pay-as-you-go model.

  • Only Alibaba Cloud main accounts can purchase computing packages.

  • For pricing, see the purchase page.

  • Computing packages are available only in the following regions:

    China (Hangzhou), China (Shanghai), China (Nanjing), China (Qingdao), China (Beijing), China (Zhangjiakou), China (Hohhot), China (Ulanqab), China (Shenzhen), China (Heyuan), China (Guangzhou), and China (Chengdu).

  • After a computing package expires, you forfeit any remaining resources.

  • You can purchase multiple computing packages and stack them. You cannot renew, upgrade, or downgrade them.

    Note

    If you purchase multiple computing packages, the system applies the one with the earliest expiration date first.

  • Computing packages are not eligible for a refund.

  • If you have both an RDS Savings Plan and an RDS computing package, the system applies the RDS computing package to your usage first.

Note

Subscription, pay-as-you-go, and Serverless are three distinct billing methods. When you use a compute package, deductions are applied strictly as specified above. For example, a compute package can offset the compute resources of pay-as-you-go instances, but it cannot offset the compute resources of Serverless instances or the storage resources of pay-as-you-go instances.

During the validity period of a resource plan, units are deducted hourly from its total balance to cover consumption by your eligible instance types.

  • Any unused units expire at the end of the plan's validity period.

  • Usage exceeding the plan's total units is billed at pay-as-you-go rates.

Note

Resource plans are measured in units. The hourly unit consumption rate varies for pay-as-you-go instances (based on engine and instance type). For details, see Resource Plan Unit Consumption Details.

Deduction order

  • An RDS resource plan applies to eligible resources in the following order of priority:

    Pay-as-you-go primary instances > Pay-as-you-go read-only instances

  • When using an RDS resource plan with an RDS Savings Plan, the application priority is as follows:

    RDS resource plans take priority over RDS Savings Plans.

Deduction examples

Example 1

Suppose you have an RDS MySQL instance of the instance type mysql.n1.micro.1 (1-core, 1 GB). You purchase a 10-unit computing plan that is valid for one year.

The deduction works as follows:

  1. The mysql.n1.micro.1 instance type consumes 0.0015 units per hour. A 10-unit computing plan provides about 10 units / 0.0015 units/hour ≈ 6,666 hours of usage.

    Note
  2. 6,666 hours is about 9 months + 7 days + 18 hours. Once the computing plan's units are depleted, the instance switches to pay-as-you-go billing.

Example 2

Suppose you have an RDS MySQL instance of the instance type mysql.n1.micro.1 (1-core, 1 GB) and an RDS PostgreSQL instance of the instance type pg.n2.2c.1m (2-core, 4 GB). You purchase a 10-unit computing plan that is valid for one year.

The deduction works as follows:

  1. The mysql.n1.micro.1 instance type consumes 0.0015 units per hour, and the pg.n2.2c.1m instance type consumes 0.0093 units per hour. Together, the two instances consume a total of 0.0015 units + 0.0093 units = 0.0108 units per hour.

  2. The 10-unit computing plan provides about 10 units / 0.0108 units/hour ≈ 925 hours of usage.

  3. 925 hours is about 1 month + 8 days + 13 hours. Once the computing plan's units are depleted, the instances switch to pay-as-you-go billing.

Purchase an RDS Compute Pack

  1. Go to the RDS buy page.

  2. Set Billing Method to Compute Plan.

  3. Select a Region and a Compute Plan Capacity.

    Compute Plan Capacity

    You can purchase a compute pack with a capacity of 5 to 10,000 units.

    Larger capacity specifications come with greater discounts:

    • 10% off for 5 to 499 units.

    • 15% off for 500 to 4,999 units.

    • 20% off for 5,000 to 10,000 units.

  4. Set the Subscription Duration and Quantity, and then click Buy Now.

    Compute packs offer the following purchase options:

    • Purchase duration: You can select a one-year or two-year term. Unused units expire at the end of the term.

    • Quantity: You can purchase multiple compute packs. Their capacities are cumulative.

  5. Review the Service Agreement and click Agree and Place Order.

Computing package usage

  1. Log in to Billing Management.

  2. Choose Account > Resource Packages.

  3. On the Resource Packages page, set Resource Dimension to Resource Package.

  4. The Instance Summary tab shows the total and remaining amount of the resource package (the Product Name is rds_cuudr_dp_cn).

  5. Click the Usage Details tab to view itemized deductions from the resource package (the Product Name is rds_cuudr_dp_cn).

Compute pack: Unit usage

Note

The credit values below are for reference only. For your actual consumption, refer to the usage details in your resource plan.

Credit consumption is calculated as follows: monthly credit consumption = hourly credit consumption x 24 x days per month, annual credit consumption = hourly credit consumption x 24 x days per year. These calculations assume a 30-day month and a 365-day year.
