ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server product editions

Edition	Description	Scenario
Basic Edition	Single-node architecture with compute-storage separation. Read-only instances are not supported.	Personal learning. Microsites. Dev and test environments for SMEs.
RDS High-availability Edition	Primary-secondary HA architecture with automatic failover. The secondary instance is inaccessible. Read-only instances are not supported.	Production databases for medium to large enterprises. Internet, IoT, e-commerce, logistics, and gaming databases.
RDS Cluster Edition	Primary-secondary HA architecture with automatic failover. The secondary instance is readable. Supports one to seven read-only instances for higher read throughput. Read-only instances do not participate in primary instance election or failover.	Production databases for medium to large enterprises. New retail, automotive, and large-scale ERP databases.

Change edition

Upgrading from Basic Edition to RDS High-availability Edition is supported for:
- SQL Server 2022 SE, SQL Server 2019 SE, SQL Server 2017 SE, SQL Server 2016 SE, and SQL Server 2014 SE
- SQL Server 2022 Web, SQL Server 2019 Web, SQL Server 2017 Web, SQL Server 2016 Web, and SQL Server 2012 Web
- SQL Server 2016 EE and SQL Server 2012 EE
Upgrading from RDS High-availability Edition to RDS Cluster Edition is supported for:
- SQL Server 2022 SE, SQL Server 2019 SE, SQL Server 2017 SE, SQL Server 2016 SE, SQL Server 2014 SE, and SQL Server 2012 SE
- SQL Server 2016 EE, SQL Server 2014 EE, and SQL Server 2012 EE
Upgrading from Basic Edition to RDS Cluster Edition is supported for:

SQL Server 2022 EE, SQL Server 2019 EE, and SQL Server 2017 EE on the Always On cluster architecture

Note

If your instance does not meet these requirements, you cannot directly change its product edition. In this case, you must create an instance with the target edition and migrate data from the original instance.
