New entry-level instance types for SQL Server Web edition

Updated at:

Effective August 16, 2023, ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server introduces new entry-level dedicated instance types for the Web edition. Compared with regular dedicated instance types, these new instance types deliver slightly lower performance at a more competitive price, meeting a wider range of business needs. For example, the mssql.u2.medium.w1 instance type saves up to 41.5% per month compared to its regular dedicated counterpart.

Limitations

When you modify the configuration of an RDS instance, you can change the instance type only to another entry-level dedicated instance type.

Use cases

  • Small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and individual developers

These instance types offer affordable pricing and stable database performance with minimal operational overhead.

  • Development and testing

These instance types are ideal for development, testing, and debugging. Creating and releasing resources on demand significantly improves development efficiency.

How to purchase

On the RDS instance buy page, select a supported region, a Web edition, and a storage type. You can then select an entry-level dedicated instance type. For more information, see Create an ApsaraDB RDS for SQL Server instance.

Note
  • Web edition instances are available only on the Basic Edition series and support only dedicated instance types.

  • You can purchase a Reserved vCPU to offset the costs of your instance's pay-as-you-go compute resources. For more information, see Reserved vCPU.
