Billable items

Updated at:

Using ApsaraDB RDS may involve the following billable items: RDS instance billable items and value-added service billable items, as well as billable items of other cloud services that are related to RDS. This topic describes the definition, billing formula, and billing method of each billable item.

You can go to RDS pricing details to view the pricing description and prices of the billable items of RDS for MySQL, or go to the RDS pricing calculator to estimate your RDS fees.

Note

The RDS pricing calculator can estimate the fees of only some billable items.

RDS instances

RDS instances are classified into the following two types based on their billing methods:

  • Subscription or pay-as-you-go RDS instances: When you purchase this type of RDS instance, you must specify the specifications of the computing resources and the storage capacity. After the purchase, RDS instance type fees and storage capacity fees are generated.

  • Serverless RDS instances: The computing resources of a Serverless instance automatically scale within the range that you specify based on the workload, and the storage capacity automatically expands based on the data volume. Serverless instances generate RCU fees and storage capacity fees.

RDS instance type

Category

Description

Definition

The fees for the computing resource specifications of subscription or pay-as-you-go RDS instances, including regular instances, read-only instances, and disaster recovery instances, as well as DuckDB analytical instances. The billable item name is RDS instance type (rds_class) or instance type (ClassCode).

This billable item is generated after an instance is created. If the computing resource specifications or the number of nodes of the instance increase or decrease, the fees of this billable item usually change.

Billing formula

  • RDS Basic Edition and RDS High-availability Edition: RDS instance type fee = Unit price of the instance type × Duration

  • MySQL and PostgreSQL RDS Cluster Edition: RDS instance type fee = Unit price per node of the instance type × Number of nodes × Duration

  • SQL Server RDS Cluster Edition: RDS instance type fee = Instance type fee of the primary instance + Instance type fees of the read-only instances

Note

The unit price of an RDS instance type varies based on the region, database engine, and instance specifications. For more information, see the buy page and your bills.

Billing method

Subscription or pay-as-you-go.

Savings plans or resource plans

Yes. Compute plans and general-purpose savings plans can offset the pay-as-you-go RDS instance type fees.

RCU of Serverless instances

Category

Description

Definition

The fees for the computing resources of RDS Serverless instances. The billable item name is RCU (rds_serverless_rcu).

This billable item is generated after a Serverless instance is created. You are charged based on the RCUs that you actually use. If you suspend the instance, billing for this item is also suspended.

Billing formula

  • RDS for MySQL and RDS for PostgreSQL: RCU fee = Unit price per RCU per node × RCU usage per node × Number of nodes × Usage duration

  • RDS for SQL Server: RCU fee = RCU unit price × RCU usage × Usage duration

Billing method

Serverless.

Savings plans or resource plans

Yes. Elastic (Special Offer) savings plans and general-purpose savings plans can offset the RCU fees of RDS Serverless instances.

Storage capacity

Category

Description

Definition

The storage fees of subscription, pay-as-you-go, or Serverless RDS instances, including regular instances, read-only instances, and disaster recovery instances, as well as DuckDB analytical instances. The billable item name is storage capacity (rds_storage or Storage).

This billable item is generated after an instance is created. If the storage capacity of the instance increases or decreases, the fees of this billable item change.

Billing formula

  • Subscription or pay-as-you-go RDS Basic Edition and RDS High-availability Edition: Storage capacity fee = Unit price of the instance storage × Instance storage capacity × Duration

  • Subscription or pay-as-you-go RDS Cluster Edition: Storage capacity fee = Unit price of storage per node × Storage capacity per node × Number of nodes × Duration

  • RDS for MySQL Serverless instances and RDS for PostgreSQL Serverless instances: Storage capacity fee = Unit price of storage per node × Storage capacity per node × Number of nodes × Duration

  • RDS for SQL Server Serverless instances: Storage capacity fee = Unit price of the instance storage × Instance storage capacity × Duration

Note
  • The unit price of RDS storage varies based on the region, RDS edition, storage type, and billing method. The price displayed in the console prevails.

  • The duration in the billing formula varies based on the billing method.

    • Subscription instances: The duration is the subscription duration that you purchase.

    • Pay-as-you-go or Serverless instances: The duration is the billing duration. The billing cycle is one hour.

  • After the storage compression feature is enabled, the billing formula for the unit storage of the instance changes. For more information, see Storage compression.

Performance auto-scaling

Category

Description

Definition

You are not charged for enabling the performance auto-scaling feature. However, after the feature is enabled, if the CPU utilization reaches the specified threshold, a computing resource specification change is triggered for the RDS for MySQL instance, and the added computing resources are billed on a pay-as-you-go basis.

  • For instances with cloud disks, performance auto-scaling changes the instance to a different RDS instance type, and the system charges the RDS instance type fees based on the new instance type. The fee change rules are the same as those for configuration changes. For more information, see Change instance specifications.

  • For instances with local disks, performance auto-scaling automatically increases the number of CPU cores, which generates a new billable item named elastic computing resources (CPU+IOPS). The code of this billable item is cpu_cores_flexible.

Billing formula

  • Elastic computing resource fee for instances with local disks = CPU unit price × Number of added CPU cores × Duration

  • New RDS instance type fee for instances with cloud disks = Unit price of the instance type × Duration

Note
  • For the CPU unit price of performance auto-scaling for instances with local disks, see Configure performance auto-scaling.

  • For instances with cloud disks, the unit price of the RDS instance type is the same as that on the buy page.

Billing method

  • Monthly fee for the Basic Edition

    • The monthly fee includes a usage quota of 100,000 characters. Unused characters are cleared at the end of the month and cannot be rolled over to the next month or refunded.

    • If you unsubscribe early, the monthly fee is refunded on a pro-rata basis, deducting the cost for the days the service was used. For example, in the China (Shanghai) region, if the monthly fee is CNY 99, the month has 30 days, and you have used the service for 10 days, you will receive a refund of CNY 66 upon unsubscription.

    • The character count in DAS Agent includes all characters in questions, answers, and O&M reports, such as Chinese characters, English letters, punctuation marks, line feeds, and other special characters. For example, the statement "DB instance rm-123 is healthy." contains 30 characters.

    • To provide a "What You See Is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) experience, DAS Agent uses character-based billing instead of token-based metering. For example, when you ask if an instance is abnormal, DAS Agent may check multiple metrics, such as CPU utilization, I/O, queries per second (QPS), transactions per second (TPS), and memory. It may also review slow SQL lists, lock analysis results, and even security risk detection results. The agent's inference determines the specific checks performed, which typically cover these common issue types. This process can consume a large number of tokens. If an issue is found, the response can be thousands of characters long. If no issues are found, the response can be as short as "This instance has no exceptions in its current state," which contains 14 characters. To provide a more intuitive understanding of usage, we bill by the number of characters in the Q&A. A typical Q&A session for SQL optimization or CPU utilization anomaly diagnosis consumes about 1,000 to 5,000 characters. An O&M report consumes about 5,000 characters. The CNY 99 monthly fee covers approximately 15 to 50 diagnoses or reports, depending on the complexity of the Q&A. You can view the character usage of each historical conversation or O&M report on the DAS Agent details page.

  • Concurrency limit: The number of concurrent Q&A sessions that can run under your user ID (UID). DAS Agent generates O&M reports asynchronously during O&M windows, so these reports are not subject to the concurrency limit. As Model Studio and DAS Agent evolve, their tokens per minute (TPM), the time required for a diagnosis, and the response length may change. The concurrency limit may be adjusted in the future. Any such adjustments will be announced.

Billing examples

The following examples illustrate fee calculation for different use cases and feature selections.

Operations and maintenance

Full SQL log recording and cluster analysis help you locate and analyze problematic SQL statements. For more information, see SQL Insight and Audit Overview. The following table lists the features in this scenario.

Assume your instance ingests 10 GB of data daily, and you set the SQL logs retention period to 30 days and the Log Index hot storage duration to 7 days.

Note

The SQL Log Storage Duration is the total retention period for your SQL logs. By default, logs are stored in cold storage. In this scenario, because you enabled log indexing, new logs are first stored in hot storage for 7 days and then moved to cold storage for the remaining 23 days.

Audit and compliance

This scenario offers bank-grade security and compliance features that meet regulatory requirements in the Chinese mainland through transparent, long-term monitoring of database activities.

Assume your instance has a daily data ingestion of 1 GB. You set the SQL logs retention period to 180 days to meet compliance regulations in the Chinese mainland.

Note
  • The SQL Log Storage Duration is the total retention period for your SQL Log. By default, logs are stored in cold storage.

  • To meet compliance regulations in the Chinese mainland, the cold storage period must be at least 180 days.

  1. You purchase a 100 GB storage disk for CNY 100/month.

  2. With a daily data ingestion of 1 GB, the storage disk fills up after 100 days. From day 101, the system continues to write logs and bills you for the overage.

    1. On day 101, a total of 101 GB of logs are stored. The pay-as-you-go fee for the 1 GB overage is 1 GB × CNY 0.048 = CNY 0.048.

    2. On day 102, a total of 102 GB of logs are stored. The pay-as-you-go fee for the 2 GB overage is 2 GB × CNY 0.048 = CNY 0.096.

    3. ... On day 180, a total of 180 GB of logs are stored. The pay-as-you-go fee for the 80 GB overage is 80 GB × CNY 0.048 = CNY 3.84.

    4. After 180 days, older logs begin to expire and are purged. The storage usage stabilizes at 180 GB, and the daily pay-as-you-go fee for the 80 GB overage remains at CNY 3.84.

  3. Because a 100 GB storage disk costs only CNY 100 per month, purchasing additional disk capacity is more cost-effective than paying overage fees. We recommend expanding your disk capacity in advance based on your usage forecast.
