A storage plan is a prepaid resource plan from ApsaraDB RDS. It offsets the costs of instance storage, backup storage (instance backups, long-term backups, and cross-region backups), and SQL audit usage for RDS for MySQL, RDS for PostgreSQL, RDS for SQL Server, and RDS for MariaDB. Usage within the plan's capacity is covered, while any excess is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis. This topic describes the billing rules for RDS storage plans and how to purchase them.

Notes

  • Only primary Alibaba Cloud accounts can purchase storage plans.

  • Storage plans cannot be upgraded or renewed.

  • For pricing details, see the purchase page.

  • Storage plans are available only in Chinese mainland regions.

China (Hangzhou), China (Shanghai), China (Nanjing - Local Region - Phasing Out), China (Qingdao), China (Beijing), China (Zhangjiakou), China (Hohhot), China (Ulanqab), China (Shenzhen), China (Heyuan), China (Guangzhou), and China (Chengdu).

  • A storage plan can be used to offset the following costs:

    • Storage for pay-as-you-go instances.

    • Backup storage for subscription and pay-as-you-go instances (excluding SSD cloud disks and ESSD cloud disks) and SQL audit usage.

Applicable resources

Note

Subscription, pay-as-you-go, and Serverless are three distinct and independent billing methods. When using a storage plan, offsets are applied according to the following rules. For example, a storage plan can offset the storage of a pay-as-you-go instance, but it cannot offset the storage of a Serverless instance.

Resource

Description

Instance storage

Offsets the storage costs of pay-as-you-go RDS instances.

Backup storage

Offsets costs for long-term backups (backups retained for more than two years), cross-region backup storage, and instance backup usage that exceeds the free quota for both pay-as-you-go and subscription RDS instances.

Note
  • You can view the free backup quota for your instance in the Basic Information > > > Instance Resources > > Backup Usage section of the instance details page.

  • Storage plans can only offset cross-region backup storage (Billable Item Code: DdrOssStorageSize) for RDS for MySQL instances that use high-performance local disks, RDS for SQL Server instances, and RDS for PostgreSQL instances. A DBS storage plan offsets the cost of cross-region backup storage (Billable Item Code: BackupStorageSize) for RDS for MySQL instances that use cloud disks.

SQL audit usage

Offsets the usage of the SQL audit feature for pay-as-you-go and subscription instances. The supported database engines are as follows:

Note
  • For RDS for MySQL, the fees for SQL Insight and Auditing are charged by Database Autonomy Service (DAS) in some regions. Storage plans can only offset these fees in regions where they are charged by RDS. For more information, see SQL Insight and Auditing.

  • If you upgrade the SQL audit feature on an RDS for PostgreSQL instance to the SQL Insight and Auditing feature of DAS Enterprise Edition, a storage plan no longer offsets the usage.

Deduction rules

Rule

Description

Deduction method

  • Each hour, the system calculates the total usage of the following resources and deducts it from your storage plan's capacity based on a deduction factor. If your usage exceeds the available capacity in the storage plan, the excess usage is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis.

    Note

The deduction factor is used to balance the differences in operational costs among various resources.

    • Storage of pay-as-you-go instances.

    • Storage for instance backups, long-term backups, and cross-region backups.

    • SQL audit usage.

  • The full capacity of the storage plan is available for deduction every hour.

For example, if you purchase a 100 GB storage plan with a one-month duration, you have 100 GB of capacity available to offset your usage costs every hour for that month.

For a detailed example, see Storage plan deduction example.

Deduction priority

  • The deduction priority among resources covered by an RDS storage plan is as follows:

Storage for pay-as-you-go primary instances > Storage for pay-as-you-go read-only instances > Backups of pay-as-you-go instances > SQL audit for pay-as-you-go primary instances > SQL audit for pay-as-you-go read-only instances > Long-term backups of pay-as-you-go instances > Cross-region backups of pay-as-you-go instances > Backups of subscription instances > SQL audit for subscription primary instances > SQL audit for subscription read-only instances > Long-term backups of subscription instances > Cross-region backups of subscription instances

  • If you use both an RDS savings plan and an RDS storage plan, they are applied in the following order of priority:

The RDS storage plan is applied before the RDS savings plan.

Storage plan deduction example

Assume you have a primary RDS instance (Basic Edition) that uses an ESSD PL1 cloud disk with 60 GB of instance storage. You also have a 500 GB long-term backup (older than two years). You purchase a 100 GB storage plan. The plan is applied as follows:

  1. Calculate the total amount of instance storage that the plan can offset: 100 GB / 1.24 = 80.645 GB.

  2. After offsetting the instance storage, calculate the remaining capacity of the storage plan: (80.645 GB - 60 GB) × 1.24 = 25.5998 GB.

  3. Calculate the amount of long-term backup storage that the remaining plan capacity can offset: 25.5998 GB / 0.1 = 255.998 GB. Since this is not enough to cover the entire 500 GB long-term backup, the plan first offsets 255.998 GB of it.

  4. The remaining 500 GB - 255.998 GB = 244.002 GB of long-term backup storage is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Note
  • The deduction factor for the instance storage of a Basic Edition primary instance with an ESSD PL1 cloud disk is 1.24. The deduction factor for long-term backups is 0.1. For more information, see Deduction factor details.

  • Instance storage is offset before long-term backup storage. For more information, see Deduction rules.

  • You can view the actual storage and backup usage of your instance on the Basic Information page in the Usage Statistics section.

FAQ

  • Q: I have a pay-as-you-go RDS instance with 100 GB of storage. If I purchase a 100 GB storage plan, can it offset the cost of the instance storage?

A: Yes. A storage plan can offset the storage costs of a pay-as-you-go instance. The storage plan is applied first to cover the cost. If the plan's capacity is insufficient, the remaining usage is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis.

  • Q: For backup storage, if I purchase both an RDS savings plan and an RDS storage plan, in what order are they applied?

A: If you have both an RDS savings plan and an RDS storage plan, the RDS storage plan is applied before the RDS savings plan.
