Learn about billing methods, billable items, and pricing for Alibaba Cloud SelectDB Serverless.

Billing overview

ApsaraDB for SelectDB Serverless has three independently billed items. You can select a billing method for each.

total cost = compute resources cost + storage resources cost + cache space cost

Billing methods

ApsaraDB for SelectDB Serverless supports two billing methods: pay-as-you-go and resource plan.

  • Pay-as-you-go: Billed by actual usage, metered per second and settled hourly. Ideal for workloads with spiky traffic or unpredictable usage.

  • Resource plan: Prepurchase resources at a unit price lower than pay-as-you-go. Plans apply across all regions, with deductions calculated at the pay-as-you-go rate of the consuming region. Ideal for stable workloads or long-term usage.

    Resource plan type

    Offset rules

    compute resource plan

Total-usage offset. After you purchase a compute resource plan, it offsets your pay-as-you-go usage.

    cache resource plan

Hourly-capacity offset. The plan offsets the corresponding storage and cache capacity each hour throughout its validity period.

Resource package deduction examples

Example 1: Cost reduction

Purchasing a Serverless compute resource package reduces your costs.

Note
  • Serverless compute resource packages are shared across regions. You only need to purchase one to offset charges in all supported regions.

  • The following calculations assume you have purchased a resource package at a unit price of CNY 0.30663/SCU*H.

Scenario
You have a Serverless application in the China (Zhangjiakou) region. This application consumes an average of 100 SCU of compute resources over one hour, for a total consumption of 100 SCU*H. The costs for this usage are calculated as follows:

  • With pay-as-you-go, your cost is CNY 32.83 = 100 SCU*H × CNY 0.3283/SCU*H.

(CNY 0.3283/SCU*H is the pay-as-you-go rate for the China (Zhangjiakou) region.)
  • When using a resource package, the deduction is calculated as follows:

    1. Calculate the deduction amount: Because the deduction factor for this region is 0.700003, the amount deducted from your resource package is 70.0003 SCU*H = 100 SCU*H (actual usage) × 0.700003 (deduction factor).

    2. Calculate the deducted cost: The cost covered by the resource package is CNY 21.46 = 70.0003 SCU*H (deducted amount) × CNY 0.30663/SCU*H (resource package unit price).

Conclusion
Although your application consumed 100 SCU*H of resources, only about 70 SCU*H was deducted from your resource package. Using the resource package instead of pay-as-you-go saves you CNY 11.37 (CNY 32.83 - CNY 21.46), a cost saving of nearly 35%.

Example 2: Cross-region deductions

A shared Serverless compute resource package offsets consumption across multiple regions.

Scenario:
Your account has the following resources:

  • A shared Serverless compute resource package with a capacity of 5,000 SCU*H.

  • An application in the China (Zhangjiakou) region.

  • An application in the China (Heyuan) region.

  • An application in the China (Chengdu) region.

The following table shows the compute resource usage for each application over one hour and the corresponding deduction from the resource package.

Region and application

Compute resource usage

Deduction (SCU*H)

China (Zhangjiakou)
(deduction factor: 0.700003)

Sustained usage of 200 SCU for 1 hour.

200 SCU × 1H × 0.700003 = 140.0006

China (Heyuan)
(deduction factor: 0.900003)

300 SCU for the first 30 minutes,
150 SCU for the next 30 minutes.

(300 SCU × 0.5H + 150 SCU × 0.5H) × 0.900003
= 225 SCU*H × 0.900003 = 202.5007

China (Chengdu)
(deduction factor: 0.900003)

Sustained usage of 100 SCU for 1 hour.

100 SCU × 1H × 0.900003 = 90.0003

Conclusion:
The total amount deducted from the resource package for the hour is the sum of the deductions from each application: 140.0006 (Zhangjiakou) + 202.5007 (Heyuan) + 90.0003 (Chengdu) = 432.5016 SCU*H.

The remaining capacity of the resource package is: 5,000 SCU*H - 432.5016 SCU*H = 4567.4984 SCU*H.

Resource pack deduction examples

Example 1: Cost savings with a resource pack

Note
  • Serverless computing resource packs are universal. A single pack offsets charges in all supported regions.

  • This calculation assumes a resource pack with a unit price of $0.04750625/SCU*H.

Scenario
A Serverless application in the Germany (Frankfurt) region consumes 100 SCU*H of computing resources over one hour. The costs for this usage under different billing methods are as follows:

  • With pay-as-you-go, your cost is $11.344 = 100 SCU*H × $0.113440/SCU*H.

($0.113440/SCU*H is the pay-as-you-go price for the Germany (Frankfurt) region.)
  • Using a resource pack, the calculation is as follows:

    1. Calculate the deduction amount: With a deduction factor of 1.563 for this region, the amount deducted from your resource pack is 156.3 SCU*H = 100 SCU*H (actual usage) × 1.563 (deduction factor).

    2. Calculate the cost of the deduction: The cost of the deducted amount is $7.4253 = 156.3 SCU*H (deduction amount) × $0.04750625/SCU*H (resource pack unit price).

Conclusion
This analysis shows that while your application's actual usage is 100 SCU*H, the deduction factor results in a 156.3 SCU*H deduction from your resource pack. Despite this, the low unit price of the resource pack means you still save $3.9187 ($11.344 - $7.4253) compared to the pay-as-you-go method. This is a cost saving of nearly 34.5%.

Example 2: Cross-region deductions

A universal Serverless computing resource pack offsets consumption across multiple regions.

Scenario
Your account has the following resources:

  • A universal Serverless computing resource pack with a capacity of 10,000 SCU*H.

  • An instance in the Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) region.

  • An instance in the Germany (Frankfurt) region.

  • An instance in the Philippines (Manila) region.

The following table shows each application's resource usage over one hour and the corresponding deduction from the resource pack.

Region and application

Computing resource usage

Deduction amount (SCU*H)

Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur)
(deduction factor: 1.412)

Consumes 50 SCU for 1 hour.

50 SCU × 1H × 1.412 = 70.6

Germany (Frankfurt)
(deduction factor: 1.563)

Consumes 80 SCU for 1 hour.

80 SCU × 1H × 1.563 = 125.04

Philippines (Manila)
(deduction factor: 1.338)

120 SCU for the first 30 minutes,
60 SCU for the next 30 minutes.

(120 SCU×0.5H + 60 SCU×0.5H) × 1.338
= 90 SCU*H × 1.338 = 120.42

Conclusion
The total deduction amount for the hour is the sum of the deductions for each application: 70.6 (Kuala Lumpur) + 125.04 (Frankfurt) + 120.42 (Manila) = 316.06 SCU*H.

The remaining capacity of the resource pack is: 10,000 SCU*H - 316.06 SCU*H = 9683.94 SCU*H.

Storage resource pack deduction examples

  • Storage plan capacity equals storage usage

You purchase a 1-month storage plan with 200 GB of capacity. All your ApsaraDB for SelectDB instances are in the China (Hangzhou) region, and your total storage usage is consistently 200 GB per hour. The storage plan's capacity is fully used, with no excess usage. Therefore, the storage fee for the month is CNY 0.12/GB/month × 200 GB × 1 month + CNY 0.00 = CNY 24.00. Compared to using only the pay-as-you-go model, you save CNY 0.0003/GB/hour × 200 GB × 24 hours × 30 days - CNY 24.00 = CNY 19.20.

  • Storage plan capacity is greater than storage usage

You purchase a 1-month storage plan with 400 GB of capacity. You have one ApsaraDB for SelectDB instance in the China (Hangzhou) region with a consistent usage of 100 GB/hour, one in the Singapore region with 100 GB/hour, and one in the Japan (Tokyo) region with 100 GB/hour. The total amount deducted from the storage plan is 100 GB × 1 + 100 GB × 1.133 + 100 GB × 1.183 = 331.6 GB. There is no excess usage. Therefore, the storage fee for the month is CNY 0.12/GB/month × 400 GB × 1 month + CNY 0.00 = CNY 48.00. Compared to using only the pay-as-you-go model, you save CNY 0.0003/GB/hour × (100 GB + 100 GB + 100 GB) × 24 hours × 30 days - CNY 48.00 = CNY 16.80.

  • Storage plan capacity is less than storage usage

You purchase a 1-month storage plan with 300 GB of capacity. You have one ApsaraDB for SelectDB instance in the China (Hangzhou) region with a consistent usage of 150 GB/hour, one in the Singapore region with 100 GB/hour, and one in the Japan (Tokyo) region with 100 GB/hour. After the storage plan's capacity is fully used, there is an excess usage of 100 GB - (300 GB - 150 GB × 1 - 100 GB × 1.133) / 1.183 = 69 GB (rounded) from the Japan (Tokyo) region, which is billed as pay-as-you-go. Therefore, the storage fee for the month is CNY 0.12/GB/month × 300 GB × 1 month + CNY 0.0003/GB/hour × 69 GB × 24 hours × 30 days = CNY 50.90. Compared to using only the pay-as-you-go model, you save CNY 0.0003/GB/hour × (150 GB + 100 GB + 100 GB) × 24 hours × 30 days - CNY 50.90 = CNY 24.70.

Storage resource pack deduction examples

All your ApsaraDB for SelectDB instances are in the China (Hangzhou) region, and your total storage usage is consistently 200 GB per hour. The storage plan's capacity is fully used, with no excess usage. Therefore, the storage fee for the month is USD 0.0173/GB/month × 200 GB × 1 month + USD 0.00 = USD 3.46. Compared to using only the pay-as-you-go model, you save USD 0.000043/GB/hour × 200 GB × 24 hours × 30 days - USD 3.46 = USD 2.732.

  • Storage plan capacity is greater than storage usage

You purchase a 1-month storage plan with 400 GB of capacity. You have one ApsaraDB for SelectDB instance in the US (Virginia) region with a consistent usage of 100 GB/hour, one in the Singapore region with 100 GB/hour, and one in the China (Hangzhou) region with 100 GB/hour. The total amount deducted from the storage plan is 100 GB × 0.92 + 100 GB × 0.98 + 100 GB × 1 = 290 GB. There is no excess usage. Therefore, the storage fee for the month is USD 0.0173/GB/month × 400 GB × 1 month + USD 0.00 = USD 6.92. Compared to using only the pay-as-you-go model, you save (USD 0.000038/GB/hour × 100 GB + USD 0.000038/GB/hour × 100 GB + USD 0.000043/GB/hour × 100 GB) × 24 hours × 30 days - USD 6.92 = USD 1.648.

  • Storage plan capacity is less than storage usage

You purchase a 1-month storage plan with 300 GB of capacity. You have one ApsaraDB for SelectDB instance in the US (Virginia) region with a consistent usage of 150 GB/hour, one in the Singapore region with 100 GB/hour, and one in the China (Hangzhou) region with 100 GB/hour. After the storage plan's capacity is fully used, there is an excess usage of 100 GB - (300 GB - 150 GB × 0.92 - 100 GB × 0.98) / 1 = 36 GB from the China (Hangzhou) region, which is billed as pay-as-you-go. Therefore, the storage fee for the month is USD 0.0173/GB/month × 300 GB × 1 month + USD 0.000043/GB/hour × 36 GB × 24 hours × 30 days = USD 6.30 (rounded). Compared to using only the pay-as-you-go model, you save (USD 0.000038/GB/hour × 150 GB + USD 0.000038/GB/hour × 100 GB + USD 0.000043/GB/hour × 100 GB) × 24 hours × 30 days - USD 6.30 = USD 3.636.
