Set message sending frequency

Updated at:

To prevent telecom carriers from blocking your messages due to high volume and to mitigate fraudulent use of verification code messages, Short Message Service lets you set a message sending frequency limit. This ensures high delivery rates and security. You can also add numbers to a frequency limit allowlist to exempt them from these limits.

Usage notes

  • Currently, only enterprise users can set the message sending frequency. If you are an individual user with real-name verification, you must first upgrade to an enterprise user.

  • Short Message Service applies throttling to message sending requests. For detailed rules, see Throttling.

  • You are responsible for any losses if a telecom carrier blocks your messages because the frequency limit is set too high.

Frequency limit for verification code messages

This limit applies to messages sent to the same phone number with the same signature.

  1. Log on to the Short Message Service console and go to the General Settings > Domestic Message Settings > Frequency Limit Settings page.

  2. In the Verification Code Message Sending Frequency section, click Modify.

  3. Set the Per-Minute Limit, Per-Hour Limit, and Per-Day Limit.

    Important

The per-minute, per-hour, and per-day limits for verification code messages cannot exceed 40.

  4. Click OK. The new settings take effect in 15 minutes.

Note

We recommend reading Prevent fraudulent use of verification codes to learn how to prevent this abuse.

Frequency limit for notification and promotional messages

This limit applies to messages sent to the same phone number with the same signature and template.

  1. Log on to the Short Message Service console and go to the General Settings > Domestic Message Settings > Frequency Limit Settings page.

  2. In the Frequency Limit for Notification and Promotional Messages section, click Modify.

  3. Set the Per-Minute Limit, Per-Hour Limit, and Per-Day Limit.

    Important

The per-minute, per-hour, and per-day limits for notification and promotional messages cannot exceed 50.

  4. Click OK. The new settings take effect in 15 minutes.

Note

For the Per-Minute Limit and Per-Hour Limit, you can enter -1 (which means no limit) or an integer greater than 0. For the Per-Day Limit, you can only enter an integer greater than 0. This frequency limit applies to messages sent to the same phone number with the same signature and template, and does not apply to messages that use a fully variable template.

Add numbers to the allowlist

Note
  • Numbers on the allowlist are exempt from the frequency limits for verification code, notification, or promotional messages. You can add up to 300 numbers. The frequency limit allowlist only exempts numbers from sending frequency limits. It does not provide any message-receiving access control and cannot be used to prevent numbers that are not on the allowlist from receiving messages. If you need to allow only specific numbers to receive verification code messages, implement number filtering logic in your own business code.

  • You cannot use an API to add numbers to the frequency limit allowlist.

  1. In the Frequency Limit Allowlist section, click Add Phone Number, and then choose Quick Add or Add One by One. You can add up to 50 phone numbers at a time.

    • Quick Add: Add multiple phone numbers at once. To add remarks, use Add One by One.

    • Add One by One: Add a remark for each phone number on the allowlist.

    Quick add

Enter one phone number per line. Press Enter to add another line.

In the Add Phone Number dialog box, you can add up to 50 numbers at a time.

    Add one by one

    • Enter a phone number and a remark, then click Add to Allowlist to add another number.

    • The remark can contain up to 200 characters, including uppercase and lowercase English letters, Chinese characters, and special characters. The remark is optional.

You can add up to 50 numbers at a time.

  2. Click OK to finish.
