Issues related to http_ssl_module of NGINX and solutions
NGINX requires the http_ssl_module to load SSL certificates. Before you install an SSL certificate, make sure that NGINX includes this module. This topic describes common http_ssl_module errors and their solutions when you manually deploy an SSL certificate on an NGINX server.
Common errors
Error 1: the "ssl" parameter requires ngx_http_ssl_module
Cause
The http_ssl_module is not compiled into the current NGINX installation.
Error 2: nginx: [emerg] unknown directive "ssl" in /usr/local/nginx/conf/nginx.conf
Cause
After you modify the configuration file and run nginx -s reload, this error indicates that the http_ssl_module is not compiled into the current NGINX version.
Error 3: ./configure: error: SSL modules require the OpenSSL library
Cause
The OpenSSL dependency library is missing.
Solution
For Error 3, install the OpenSSL development library on the server.
For Errors 1 and 2, verify that OpenSSL is installed on the server, then recompile NGINX with the http_ssl_module enabled.
The following example uses CentOS 8.0 64-bit, NGINX 1.14.1, and OpenSSL 1.1.1k. Adjust the OpenSSL version based on your NGINX version.
Check whether the current NGINX version includes the http_ssl_module.
Run the following command to view the compile parameters of NGINX:
nginx -V | grep http_ssl_module--with-http_ssl_module, the module is already included. Otherwise, you must manually add it.Example output:
