Create an instance

Updated at:

An instance is the basic unit for resource management in Tablestore. Tablestore performs access control and resource metering at the instance level.

Usage notes

  • You can create up to 10 instances per Alibaba Cloud account. Instance names must be unique within a region. To increase the quota, submit a ticket.

  • The region and instance type cannot be changed after an instance is created. Choose these settings carefully.

    Note

Tablestore features vary by region, as listed in Feature and region support.

  • To create and manage a Tablestore instance, a RAM user must be granted the AliyunOTSFullAccess permission. If this permission is missing, API calls return a 403 AuthFailed error.

  • An instance that is bound to a VPC can be accessed only from that VPC. If you manage the instance (for example, release the instance) from outside the bound VPC, the operation fails with an OTSAuthFailed error.

Prerequisites

The Tablestore service is activated.

Procedure

Create an instance or a time series model instance in the Tablestore console.

Instance

  1. Log on to the Tablestore console.

  2. In the top navigation bar, select a resource group and a region.

The console displays the instance types available in the selected region.

  3. Click Create Instance.

  4. In the Billing Method dialog box, select a billing method.

Tablestore offers two billing methods for instances: VCU mode (formerly reserved mode) and CU Mode (Formerly On-demand Mode). Compare them in Differences between VCU mode and CU mode.

    Billing method

    Description

    VCU mode

Purchase reserved VCUs based on resource estimates, or enable elastic capability for pay-as-you-go computing.

    Note

Saves computing costs. Set an elastic capability limit or disable elasticity to keep usage predictable and avoid unexpected charges from traffic spikes.

    CU mode

Pay for consumed resources (read/write throughput and storage). No upfront capacity planning required.

    Note

Best for workloads with unpredictable traffic fluctuations.

    VCU mode (Recommended)

    1. On the VCU Mode (Formerly Reserved Mode) tab, click Activate Now. Configure the Tablestore instance parameters as described in the following table, and then click Buy Now.

      Parameter

      Description

      Commodity type

Only VCU Mode (Formerly Reserved Mode) is supported.

      Region

The region where the instance resides.

      Reserved VCU

All computing resources are measured in VCUs. One VCU equals 4 vCPUs and 16 GB of memory. Estimate your needs with VCU mode (formerly Reserved mode).

Select the number of reserved VCUs (0 to 1000).

      • If set to 0, no upfront payment is required, but elastic capability must be enabled.

      • If set to a non-zero value, upfront payment is required. Elastic capability is optional.

      Elastic capability

Enable or disable elastic capability for the instance:

      • Enable: Default value is Reserved VCU * 2 (minimum 5). The sum of elastic capability and reserved VCUs cannot exceed 2000.

The elastic upper limit equals reserved VCUs plus elastic capability, adjustable after purchase. How do I adjust the elastic upper limit of an instance?.

        Important

If Reserved VCU is set to 0, you must enable the elastic capability for the instance.

      • Disable: Limits computing resources to the purchased reserved VCUs.

        Note

You can enable elastic capability after the instance is created. How do I enable the elastic capability for an instance?.

      Storage type

Select a storage type based on your use case. Instance types.

      • Capacity: Low-cost storage for write-heavy workloads that tolerate higher read latency.

      • High-performance: Low-latency, high-stability storage for latency-sensitive workloads.

      Instance name

The system automatically generates the instance name.

      Instance alias

Display name in the console. Defaults to the instance name.

      Instance description

      A description of the instance.

      Resource group

The resource group to which the instance belongs. The default value is Default resource group.

If the existing resource groups do not meet your requirements, click Create Resource Group to create one.

      Tag

You can add a tag to the instance to categorize and manage it.

      Purchase duration

The subscription duration for the instance.

    2. On the Confirm Order page, review the configuration, accept the terms of service, and then click Pay.

    3. On the Payment page, confirm the order and click Purchase.

    4. After payment, click Management Console to return to the Tablestore console.

    CU mode

    1. On the CU Mode (Formerly On-demand Mode) tab, configure the instance parameters as described in the following table.

      Parameter

      Description

      Region

The region where the instance resides.

      Resource group

The resource group to which the instance belongs.

      Instance name

The name of the instance. The name must meet the following requirements:

      • Must contain only letters, digits, and hyphens (-).

      • Must start with a letter.

      • Cannot end with a hyphen (-).

      • Must be case-insensitive.

      • Must be 3 to 16 characters in length.

      • Cannot contain the reserved words ali, ay, ots, taobao, or admin.

      Instance type

Select an instance type that fits your use case.

      • High-performance: Ideal for online workloads that require high concurrency and extremely low read/write latency.

      • Capacity: Ideal for offline workloads that require low-cost data storage. This type is not suitable for online workloads that are sensitive to access latency.

      Redundancy type

Tablestore supports locally redundant storage (LRS) and zone-redundant storage (ZRS).

For higher availability, create an instance in a region that supports zone-redundant storage (ZRS).
