What are coupons

Alibaba Cloud offers coupons as promotional benefits during marketing campaigns. They are categorized by type as Cash Coupon, Spend and Save Coupon, and Discount Coupon.

Cash Coupon: A coupon with a fixed value that can be applied to bills or orders multiple times until its balance is used up.
Spend and Save Coupon: A coupon with a spending threshold (for example, "Spend 100Yuan to get 10Yuan off") that can be applied as a one-time deduction after the order amount meets the threshold.
Discount Coupon: A one-time discount on an order amount with no minimum spending requirement, up to a maximum deductible amount.

Coupons are also categorized by scope: general-purpose coupons and product-specific coupons.

General-purpose coupon: Applies to most Alibaba Cloud products, such as ECS, OSS, and ApsaraDB for RDS. General-purpose coupons cannot be used for cloud communication products, domain names, physical goods, or any third-party products from the Alibaba Cloud Marketplace. For a detailed list of exclusions, see Products ineligible for general-purpose coupons.
Product-specific coupon: Applies only to specific products designated in a promotion. The promotion defines the redemption rules.
- Coupons for specific products on the official Alibaba Cloud website cannot be used for Alibaba Cloud Marketplace products.
- Coupons for specific Alibaba Cloud Marketplace products cannot be used for products on the official Alibaba Cloud website.

Important

Effective June 8, 2023, coupons marked as "Applicable to all products" no longer apply to charges for Voice Service (VS), Short Message Service (SMS), or Message Service (MNS).

You can typically obtain coupons from promotional campaigns on the official website. Before you claim a coupon, review its rules and conditions.

To view your coupons, log in to the Expenses and Costs console and navigate to the Coupons page.

You can find a specific coupon by filtering by criteria such as Effective Time, status (Valid, Exhausted, Expired, or Void), or Coupon No..
The coupon list provides details such as Nominal Value, Balance, Coupon Type, Applicable Commodity, Applicable Scope, CouponStatus, Validity Period, and Voucher Issue Time. The Order Type field indicates eligible transaction types, such as "new purchase, renewal, trial, conversion, scaling, upgrade, and pay-as-you-go bills".

Each account can hold a maximum of 50 valid coupons at a time. This limit includes "frozen" coupons that are applied to unpaid orders. To claim new coupons, you must first use your existing ones or wait for them to expire.

How to use coupons

View a coupon's details on the Coupons page before you use it. Each coupon has specific rules, such as applicable products, eligible billing methods (subscription or pay-as-you-go), and usage conditions. Some coupons cannot be combined with other promotions.

Apply a coupon during order payment

When you purchase a subscription resource, such as a subscription ECS instance, the system automatically identifies available coupons based on the order's product, payment type, and amount. On the Payment Page, you can manually select an eligible coupon to apply to your order.

Usage limit: You can use only one coupon per order. A single coupon can be used for multiple orders within its validity period until its balance is exhausted.
Frozen coupons: A coupon applied to an unpaid order is frozen. To use the coupon again, you must cancel the order. Go to the My Orders page, find the associated unpaid order, and void it. After the order is canceled, the coupon's status returns to "Valid".
Use coupons for renewals: When you manually renew a resource, the payment page displays applicable coupons for you to select. If you enable auto-renewal, the system automatically applies an eligible coupon based on its usage rules.

Note

If no eligible coupons appear on the payment page, return to the purchase page, select Add to Cart, then apply a coupon on the Confirm Order page during checkout.

Automatic deduction for pay-as-you-go bills

For pay-as-you-go resources, the system automatically applies active coupons to offset charges when you are billed.

Automatic matching: The system prioritizes coupons with the earliest expiration date. If multiple coupons have the same expiration date, the one with the highest balance is used first.
Multi-coupon deduction: If a coupon's balance is insufficient to cover an entire bill, the system automatically applies the next available Cash Coupon to the remaining amount. This process continues until the bill is fully paid or all available coupons are used.
Balance payment: If a balance remains on the bill after all eligible coupons are applied, you must pay the remaining amount.

Note

Coupons cannot be used to cover overdue payments. You must add funds to your account to clear any overdue balance. After the balance is cleared, you can use coupons for new pay-as-you-go charges.

Go to the Coupons page. In the Actions column for a specific coupon, click View Details to see its usage history.

On the Billing Details page, check the Coupon Deduction Amount field to see how a coupon was applied to a specific order or bill.

Share coupons across multiple accounts

If your enterprise has multiple Alibaba Cloud accounts, you can enable Enterprise Account Center and use equity asset sharing to share coupons within your organization and optimize costs.

Prerequisites: The Enterprise Account Center feature is enabled.
Procedure:
1. Log in to the Expenses and Costs console. In the left-side navigation pane, click Account Sharing and go to the Equity Asset Sharing page. To share a coupon, select it, click Edit in the Actions column, and then configure the sharing settings.
2. You can share with an Organization or an Account. If you share with an organization, the coupon is shared with all accounts in that organization, and access automatically updates as accounts are added or removed. If you share with specific accounts, the scope is fixed and does not change automatically.
3. Cancel sharing: In the Actions column, you can cancel sharing for coupons that are already shared.

When an order is canceled, you unsubscribe from a resource, or provisioning fails, a used coupon may be refunded. Refund eligibility depends on the product, payment status, and order type:

If you cancel an order before payment, the coupon is refunded.
If resource provisioning fails after an order is placed or a bill is rolled back, Cash Coupons and Spend and Save Coupons are refunded. Discount Coupons are not refunded.
If you unsubscribe from a resource or a bill is adjusted, the system follows a set of rules to determine whether to refund the coupon.
For certain products, such as domain names and Cloud Virtual Host, coupons are not refunded if the order or resource creation fails.

FAQ

Why can't I use my coupon?

Coupons have specific usage rules and restrictions. To view these details, log in to the Coupons management page or check the relevant campaign page.

Product restriction: The coupon is not applicable to the current product.
Validity period: The coupon has expired.
Scenario: The coupon is not valid for this order type.
Duration limit: The order does not meet the duration requirements of the coupon.
Order Amount: The order amount does not meet the spending requirement for the Spend and Save Coupon.
Mutually exclusive offer: You have already applied another discount or promotion.
Device: If you cannot use the coupon on your mobile device, you can try switching browsers or using it on a computer.

Restrictions: For example, the 300 yuan student coupon can only be used on its designated activity page. To use it, you must go to the Student Coupon Center. Even on the Student Coupon Center page, the coupon applies only to specific products that are marked as eligible. We recommend that you check the coupon details to confirm the applicable products.

Products ineligible for general-purpose coupons

Items ineligible for general-purpose coupons fall into the following categories: specific products, specific commodities, and physical goods or third-party products from the Alibaba Cloud Marketplace.

Physical goods and third-party Alibaba Cloud Marketplace products: General-purpose coupons cannot be used for physical goods or any third-party products from the Alibaba Cloud Marketplace. Physical goods include hardware and accessories, such as server hardware and networking devices.
