This article explains how to use the topic dependency model to automatically link dependencies for product-based projects. This helps product managers centralize product capability planning, improve project oversight, and ensure projects progress smoothly.

Background

We provide automation rule templates for dependencies to simplify linking between projects and product topic work items in a product planning space.

Add automation rules

You can trigger an automation rule to run when a dependency is created. Available actions include changing a status, updating a field, sending a notification, or triggering a Webhook.

For example, in the Add Automation Rule dialog box, select the Dependency Linkage template. Configure the trigger to run when a product topic adds a dependency on a product requirement work item. Set the action to change the status to In Design. Select Automation Rule as the execution account, and click Add to Rule List.

You can also trigger an automation rule when a dependency's status changes.

In the Add Automation Rule dialog box, select the Dependency Linkage category. Configure the trigger to run when all dependent product requirement work items for a product topic have the status Completed. Then, set the action to change the topic's status to Completed. Select Automation Rule as the execution account, and click Add to Rule List.

The product planning space template and the business feedback management space template come with pre-configured automation rules.

The templates include the following three pre-configured automation rules: When a dependency enters In Design, the topic also enters In Design; When a dependency enters In Development, the topic also enters In Development; and When all dependencies are Completed, the topic becomes Completed. All three rules are enabled by default, and their execution account is Automation Rule.

Rules run in their listed order, which you can adjust manually. Rules from a template cannot be edited directly, but they can be copied. To modify the template, go to Global Settings > Project Template. On the project template configuration page, you can view the list of automation rules and see which ones are enabled. Each rule from the template has a Copy button. You can also see which projects are associated with the template.

Note

Before you make changes to a template, check which projects are associated with it. Your modifications will affect all associated projects.
