Before you use Cloud Backup to back up an Oracle database deployed on an ECS instance, you must register the database instance on the Cloud Backup console. When you register the database, Cloud Backup installs a backup client on the ECS instance, enabling you to back up your Oracle database.

Prerequisites

  • You have activated Cloud Backup. While activation is free, using the Cloud BackupCloud Backup feature is subject to the following fees:

    • Database backup vault rental fee. The service is free for the first 30 days per user ID and includes 100 GB of free storage per vault per month.

    • Database backup storage fee. You are charged based on the amount of storage that you use after data deduplication and compression. The service is free for the first 30 days, after which a tiered pricing model applies.

    • Note

Registering an Oracle database without creating a backup planCloud Backup incurs no fees.

    For more information, see Pricing.

  • You have completed the required preparations.

Usage notes

  • If you only register an Oracle database on the console and do not create a backup plan, Cloud Backup does not charge any fees.

  • Limitations apply to supported database versions, operating systems, and backup features. For more information, see Compatibility list and usage limits.

Procedure

  1. Log on to the Cloud Backup console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Backup > Database Backup. Select a region and click Oracle. On the ECS Database Instance tab, click Register Database Instance.

  3. In the Register Oracle Database Instance panel, select the target database and click Next.

    Note
    • If the database instance is not listed, click Discover Database. Cloud Assistant automatically scans your ECS instances to find the database.

    • There are limitations on the supported database versions and backup features. For more information, see Supported database versions and backup features.

  4. On the Config Link Info tab, you can activate the instance using either a database username and password or password-free login. Enter the required information for your chosen method, and then click OK.

    Important

If you need to perform recovery tasks for an Oracle RAC cluster or back up and recover an Oracle Data Guard standby database, you must log on with the database username and password during this instance activation step. If you use password-free login, these backup and recovery tasks will fail.

    Parameter

    Description

    Database Account

The username for the database instance.

This user account must have the sysdba role and the resource and connect permissions. For more information, see Step 2: Create a backup account and configure permissions.

    Password

    The user's password.

Cloud Backup automatically installs and activates the backup client on the selected ECS instance, a process that takes about one minute. You can view the registration status on the ECS Database Instance page. After the registration is successful, the Client Status changes to Installed, and the Database Status changes to Online.

More operations

  • Unregister Instance

To unregister an instance that you no longer need to back up, go to the ECS Database Instance tab, find the instance, and in the Actions column, choose > Unregister Instance. Click OK in the confirmation dialog box.

    Warning

After you unregister an instance, its backup data becomes unrecoverable.

  • Create Cluster

If your Oracle database instance is part of a cluster, you must manually create the cluster after registering the instances. Cloud Backup then backs up these database instances as a single cluster to the same backup vault. On the ECS Database Instance tab, select the database instances for the cluster and click Create Cluster. In the dialog box, confirm your selections and click OK.

    Note

After creating an Oracle RAC cluster, you only need to configure a backup plan on a single database instance to perform subsequent operations.
